COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local seniors celebrated a special prom day on Friday at Heritage Manor’s Adult Day Service in Youngstown—dressed in their best clothes with a guest, they enjoyed dinner, photos against elegant backdrops, and dancing to socialize; the program offers a welcome break for those who usually stay at home.  WKBN
  • Youngstown’s Bess Purpose Inc. received the donated Gethsemane Church at 1727 Kincaid Road to help single-parent families, veterans and those facing homelessness—its new space will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late October and store donated furniture for those in need.  The Vindicator
  • The Western Reserve Port Authority is partnering with the Youngstown Air Reserve Station and the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport to build the Air Heritage Walking Trail—a one-mile path shaped like a C—130 aircraft near the airport. The trail will feature interactive QR code signage and use grindings from a taxiway, and it is expected to open in spring 2026.  WFMJ
  • Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley is hosting a Socktober drive to collect new undergarments for men, women and children in need. Donations are accepted at WKBN and at the mission located at 1300 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Youngstown from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—the drive aims to provide essential items for those experiencing homelessness.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • Emily Ciccone, 29—a candidate for Austintown Trustee and wife of Mahoning County Clerk Michael Ciccone—was booked into Mahoning County Jail on Thursday for domestic violence.  WKBN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Youngstown will host its first two-day Y-Live event at Wean Park with John Mayer performing Friday, September 26th and Tim McGraw taking the stage today at 7 p.m. Local bars, restaurants + hotels expect heavy traffic as free pre-concert parties at Apollo Event Center begin at 3 p.m. on both days.  WFMJ
  • David Labra spoke at the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Month opening at the Public Library on Wick Avenue to honor local culture—flags from 22 Hispanic countries were shown as he urged residents to carry forward their heritage. Youngstown State University and community groups co-hosted the event to celebrate cultural contributions.  Tribune Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Youngstown Area Goodwill received a $500K grant to launch a job readiness program for people in recovery from substance use disorder in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties—about 160 individuals will get help to secure employment. The grant is part of the Appalachian Regional Commission's INSPIRE Initiative to fill workforce gaps and boost the local economy.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Ohio State and NFL star Doug Datish visited Champion Elementary School on Friday morning to join fourth graders in the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge as they practiced exercise, proper sleep, and balanced eating—he will return later to review their progress.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mahoning County Prosecutor Lynn Maro will host People’s Law School at the Boardman Library every Wednesday in October — on October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to teach local residents the basics of the court system and allow time for questions.  WKBN
  • Two Youngstown firefighters who once led their union have filed a defamation lawsuit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Thursday because Mayor Jamael Tito Brown falsely labeled them as racist—remarks they say hurt their work and personal lives.  The Vindicator

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New owners of the Ohio One Building held a ribbon-cutting Friday to mark their takeover of the historic structure built in the 1930s for Ohio Edison. The building is 75% occupied and plans include restoring original light fixtures that have been kept in storage for 50 years—an effort that will support downtown growth.  WKBN
