COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Y-Live 2025 ended this weekend with live music and community spirit. Director of operations at JAC Management said crews will take down chairs and tents on Sunday and plan to reset Wean Park by Wednesday — thanks to help from all partners.  WKBN
  • The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile stopped at Boardman Park on Sunday to join Oktoberfest activities—families took pictures, saw inside the mobile, and got a free whistle before it headed to Toledo.  WKBN
  • Charles Griffin, 92, served in the Navy during the Korean War and later worked 41 years at Republic Steel where he became the first black electrician—he broke racial barriers by moving into one of the first black homes on Alameda Avenue and showing quiet resilience.  The Vindicator
  • Tyler Hanes spent the weekend setting up 800 foam pumpkins for Ty’s Pumpkin Walk at Anguili’s Farm Market—an event that will kick off Oct. 3 with donations going to charity though admission is free.  WKBN
  • Joe Spurio, a New Castle native who grew up in Youngstown and is a World War II veteran, celebrated his 105th birthday with family and friends at Tippecanoe Country Club on Sunday. He said his long life is due to simple habits like daily exercise at the Jewish Community Center Pool and a diet with garlic+olive oil.  WKBN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A court appointed a receiver to manage SOBE Thermal Energy Systems + taking control of its real property, equipment, bank accounts and operating its business including collections.  WFMJ
  • A data center and AI server facility will be built at the Lordstown section of the General Motors complex to support artificial intelligence using large datasets, and tech expert Paul Hugenberg said the automated facility will create side and feeder jobs with minimal local disruption—focusing on efficiency over noise.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Braceville African-American Heritage Museum had its official opening on Saturday at 1250 Cedar St. SW with a ribbon cutting by Annette Watts and Tamara Shavers — the museum displays artifacts and photos while showcasing local African-American history and a dedicated sports room featuring figures like Earnie Shavers and Ted Toles, and it was supported by the Braceville Community Foundation.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Trumbull County Historical Society’s series shows Girard’s heritage through the Barnhisel House—built around 1840 as a Greek Revival home turned museum, the Girard Hall of Fame honoring local sports figures since 1997, and the Girard-Liberty Union Cemetery established in 1813 with its granite mausoleum.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Tim McGraw headlined the second night of YLive at Wean Park on Saturday night—his performance had been postponed from 2024 due to a Realty Tower explosion and construction issues—and fans gathered eagerly as The Band Perry and Chase McDaniels opened the show.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Game Changers is launching a new Mahoning chapter that offers mentorship, scholarships, academic help and volunteer programs so student athletes can become MVPs in life. The program will soon require school involvement for scholarships and will host Grad and Go sessions at local schools — a change that comes after delays from the COVID-19 pandemic.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Youngstown paid a $739,500 fee to the federal government for missing deadlines on its wastewater improvement project. City officials had asked to do sewer work as an alternative option but were not allowed—spokesman Andy Resnick said the payment was wired from the wastewater fund.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Youngstown hosted an Infant Vitality Block Party at Wick Park Saturday to mark Infant Mortality Awareness Month and to promote healthy pregnancies and families. Greater Youngstown Community Dialogue on Racism managed the event that aimed to address Mahoning County's high infant death rate—focusing on improved outcomes for moms and babies.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cleveland Guardians won 9-8 over the Rangers on Sunday when Brayan Rocchio hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning that gave the team its largest comeback win and clinched the AL Central title after Detroit lost earlier; they will host the Tigers in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series on Tuesday + the win marked their ninth walk-off victory this season.  WFMJ
