- ➤ The Youngstown Business and Professional Women’s group Women Helping Women will honor 2025 Woman of the Year Dionne Dowdy Lacey, executive director of United Returning Citizens, at a dinner event at Lake Club in Poland on October 21 at 5:30 p.m.—all proceeds will fund two scholarships after awarding $10,000 earlier this year; tickets cost $75 per person with reservations due by October 10. - ➤ Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley plans to use 9.5 acres on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to build transitional homes for homeless singles and families who must work full-time and meet with administrators weekly, and it will add 8—10 emergency rooms for women and children—the mission is asking for donors and offering tours for future projects. - ➤ Celebrity chefs competed at the annual Chili Cookoff hosted by the Boardman Optimist Club at Avion on the Water in Beaver Township Wednesday night; First News reporter Jeremy Jones won the top prize in the Battle of the Broadcasters. The event raised money for local programs that benefit children—and several cooks ran out of chili within the first 90 minutes. WKBN

- ➤ Lynn Maro, now county prosecutor, has revived People’s Law School in Boardman by offering free two-hour sessions on legal topics at Boardman Library — the series began on Wednesday evening and will continue for the next four weeks covering topics like criminal prosecution, human trafficking and constitutional law. - ➤ Ohio fourth graders will have free access to state museums and historic sites during the 2025-26 school year with the new Fourth Grade History Pass launched by State Representative Monica Robb Blasdel. Students must carry a printed or digital pass with one paying adult (they can visit sites like the Canton Museum of Art and Mahoning Valley Historical Society) (the pass is valid until August 31). - ➤ The EPA sent a notice to Cortland asking city officials to submit a written report within 30 days after heavy rain caused a sewer overflow from a lift station on Old Oak Drive into Walnut Creek—officials said they will fix the reporting lapse and have replaced the operator to meet Ohio EPA rules. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, Youngstown City Council approved spending up to $125,000 for planning street work near Youngstown State University and doubled the police cadet program from 15 to 30 to boost safety — they also supported a plan to restore the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve area and granted a 10-year 75% tax break to Gulu Electrical Contractors for a warehouse expansion, with work set to begin in the second half of next year. - ➤ Mahoning County elections workers dried out voting machines after a water pipe burst at Oak Hill Renaissance Place on Monday morning—seven machines were taken out for checks and will be replaced for early voting next week while officials plan to find a new home for the board. WKBN
- ➤ On Tuesday morning, Wabash Power Equipment removed its steam production unit from Sobe Thermal Energy Systems after nonpayment, leaving 27 downtown buildings without hot water as a plan to use the Youngstown State University steam plant failed when old pipes leaked steam—John Hyden said the pipes had deteriorated over 10 years. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is working with SOBE and city officials on short- and long-term solutions. WKBN
- ➤ A government shutdown is causing worry for families in Mahoning Valley as county officials say SNAP and Ohio Works First benefits will continue through October (21,000 households use SNAP) but future support remains unclear. The Second Harvest Food Bank said it prepared for the shutdown by stockpiling two months of food and using 29% USDA-supplied inventory to support pantries in three counties. WFMJ
- ➤ W. Boardman Street in downtown Youngstown will be closed today from (7 a.m. to 12 p.m.) between S. Hazel and S. Phelps as crews use a crane to replace a generator on a building's roof. WKBN

- ➤ Braydich Dental in Hubbard will host its annual Smiles from the Heart event on Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 45 E. Liberty St.—the event will help 200 low-income or uninsured adults get a free filling, cleaning, extraction or denture adjustment—providing needed dental care. WKBN
