- ➤ Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley started work Thursday morning at Penguin City Brewery to build five small playhouses for kids in need. The project—partnered with United Way and Mahoning Valley—will be unveiled later Thursday and may expand next year. WKBN
- ➤ 7 17 Credit Union is hosting the Blues, Brews & BBQ Festival at Warren Community Amphitheatre on Saturday from noon to 10 p.m.—admission is $10. The festival will feature national blues headliner Shemekia Copeland, local acts, a BBQ cookoff with four judged categories, kids’ activities and proceeds benefiting United Way, Game Changers Inc. and Great Warren-Youngstown Urban League. - ➤ The Amish Market in Boardman is celebrating its 12th anniversary with a three-day Fall Anniversary Event that features vendor specials offering a range of meats + handmade furniture. The event began Thursday and continues today and into Saturday with varying hours at 6121 South Avenue. WKBN
- ➤ Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past invites the community to join Ohio Nonviolence Week from October 5th to October 11th with events including a 15th annual nonviolence parade starting at 3 p.m. on Wick Avenue and Wood Street—followed by a rally at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheater, a fundraiser dinner at Flambeau's, and art, poetry, and dialogue sessions at several local venues. - ➤ Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries is hosting Scream for Screenings—a job, health, and resource fair at the Metroplex Expo Center in Girard from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.—which will offer free health screenings, job resources, hygiene kits, trick-or-treating at resource tables, and prizes. WKBN

- ➤ Sinister Fest is starting today at Skyway Drive-In and will run through Saturday—offering over 30 Halloween vendors and a movie lineup of studio and independent horror films. The event was launched by Justin Haines of Dead Ink Apparel and will include special guest Lew Temple. The Vindicator

- ➤ A Youngstown woman won a $100,000 top prize on a lottery scratch-off—she plans to use the money to buy a car, replace furniture, and cover bills. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Drivers in Youngstown are advised by PennDOT to watch for deer on roads as deer-related crashes climbed to a five-year high, and safety tips include reducing distractions—such as setting music and GPS before driving and increasing following distance. Mercer County reported 538 deer-related crashes over five years with injuries and some fatalities, so extra caution is needed when deer are spotted—drivers should slow down and use headlights with their wipers on. - ➤ Second Harvest Food Bank has prepared for the potential government shutdown by planning to increase truckloads and seek new supply partnerships — steps meant to keep its warehouse stocked if USDA supplies slow down. The group, which serves 160 pantries and supports 8% more people than last year, is confident it will get enough food from other suppliers. WKBN
- ➤ The Ohio Department of Aging announced an expanded service program for Ohioans 55 or older in Mahoning and Trumbull counties that is delivered through Buckeye PACE with facilities on Market Street in Youngstown and Elm Road in Warren—offering care such as primary care, specialty services, and home health to help seniors remain at home. - ➤ Crews in downtown Youngstown are waiting on a new boiler to replace the repossessed unit that left 27 buildings without heat and hot water. Mayor Tito Brown said heat will be restored by the end of the weekend if delivered Friday or sooner if delivered Thursday, and crews will work to secure a backup boiler. WFMJ
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries donated clothing to Mercy Health Saint Elizabeth Hospital to keep its patient clothing closet stocked with shirts, pants and jackets. Hospital officials said the donation supports patients and those facing emergencies — future donations will help start a similar closet at Mercy Health’s new behavioral hospital on Belmont Avenue in Liberty Township when it opens.
