COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WKBN has partnered with the Rescue Mission for the annual Mahoning Valley Coffee Trail, where locals can buy a $25 guide to enjoy coffee at 24 shops across the valley until the first Monday in December — all funds will help feed and shelter people. The guides are available online starting Monday.  WKBN
  • Youngstown Area Jewish Federation issued a statement Friday condemning hate violence after an attack on a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur that injured five and killed two, and a shooting at an LDS church in Michigan that injured eight and killed two — the group also credited the Nonprofit Security Grant Program with funding needed for security upgrades.  WKBN
  • Residents on the East Side have long complained about the neglected McGuffey Mall site and saw contaminants removed with a $100,000 state grant funding the cleanup in September. Over the next few weeks, the Port Authority and Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation will plant trees along the perimeter—an initial step before an excavation plan is presented in the coming months.  WKBN
  • On Thursday, Habitat for Humanity of the Mahoning Valley built five themed playhouses at Penguin City Brewing Co.—local groups and volunteers from Hollywood Gaming, Dearing Compressor, Mercy Health Foundation and YSU helped design and paint the structures to match each family’s wishes. United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley will soon deliver the playhouses to their new homes.  The Vindicator

CRIME NEWS

  • The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation said it was horrified by a Wednesday car and knife attack at a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur and by a Sept. 28 attack on an LDS church service in Michigan—warning that hate-filled violence has no place in a just society.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nightmare in Niles is a spooky event that opened Friday in Niles—now held in a new 82,000 square foot indoor space featuring attractions like the Gore Reformatory and Barn of Evil. Organizers partnered with the Cafaro Company to triple its size, and the event will run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through November 1 with admission at $30 and fast passes at $40.  WKBN
  • Youngstown’s history came alive Friday night downtown during the third annual Historical Ghost Tour — actors portrayed figures from the past and highlighted landmarks like Warner Theater, McKelvey’s Department Store, and Tomorrow Club — as visitors paid $10 to join the event.  WKBN

  • Earlier this month, the Raymond John Wean Foundation approved $655,000 in grants to two local groups that help students and job seekers. Inspiring Minds got $300,000 for programs in Warren and Youngstown and OCCHA received $355,000 for job training—helping Hispanic residents in the Mahoning Valley.  Tribune Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews working on a new noise wall along I-680 in Boardman Township made good progress on Friday—installing prefabricated panels that feature local designs including an image of Saint James Meeting House. The project stretches from Route 224 to the Midlothian Boulevard exit in Youngstown and will be complete by the end of November.  WKBN
  • Sebring fire department will ask voters to renew its levy in November that brings in over $100,000 a year for firefighter protection as a $630,000 SAFER grant was awarded for recruitment and retention but cannot be used for equipment — fire chief Michael Springer said the department will clearly explain how both funding sources work together. The levy has been in place since 1996.  WKBN
  • City Council approved new accounts to manage the Mahoning County OVI Task Force fiscal year that runs from October 1 to September 30. Finance Director Christine Clayton said the city will soon receive $250,000 from a Federal grant for checkpoints and patrols—marking 15 years of service led by Canfield police and grant coordinator Lt. Scott Weamer.  The Vindicator
  • Trumbull County Representative Dave Thomas said the working group’s plan to control property taxes delays relief for homeowners and does not lower current tax bills. He urged lawmakers to cap tax increases to inflation — a measure that would help avoid steep tax spikes.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Giant Eagle Inc. is recalling its Smoked Mozzarella Pasta Salad because Listeria may be present. The salad was sold starting September 25 at Giant Eagle and Market District stores and customers should dispose of it and return a receipt for a refund — call Giant Eagle Customer Care with questions.  WKBN
