COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Calcutta Fire Department hosted a four-hour fall event at Randy’s Raisings on Saturday that featured a corn maze, hayrides, face painting and pumpkin picking. The department thanked local residents for their support — the event will help them fund emergency work while Randy’s Raisings stays open with fall activities through the end of October.  WKBN
  • The Youngstown Diocese announced Saturday that Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Saint Mary in Mineral Ridge will merge into Queen of Heaven parish while Saint Brendan, Saint Christine, and Our Lady of Sorrows will merge into Saint Mary Magdalene parish (mass will be held only at Saint Christine starting Jan. 1) and that Saints Peter and Paul will become a secondary site (mass will cease there on Nov. 2).  WKBN
  • Today 21 Newsroom reports that Ohio’s Motion Picture Tax Credit program continues to invite film projects while a new development will soon bring jobs and more income tax to Youngstown—downtown also gears up for family events as 99% of wildfires in Pennsylvania are caused by humans. Laird Brunner was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run death, Boardman schools warn that a new state law will tighten budget pressures, Governor DeWine plans to legalize drug testing supplies to curb overdoses, and historical records reveal a 150-year-old abandoned coal mine with steep highwalls.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • Valley Christian high school canceled Saturday’s football game after a confrontation at practice when three former students showed up and one grabbed a gun—no one was hurt—and police are still searching for that individual.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new boiler is headed to Youngstown for the SOBE Thermal Energy Systems plant as a crew works through the weekend to install it so that it will run early next week. City officials moved to bring in the new unit after the previous boiler was repossessed by court order—27 downtown buildings now rely on it for heating and cooling.  WFMJ
  • Penguin City hosted its first voter registration party on Saturday night—candidates for council, judge and mayor met with locals while YSU Student Government and the League of Women Voters handed out voter information. This event aimed to boost local participation ahead of the upcoming election.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • NAMI Mahoning Valley hosted its annual mental health walk through Austintown Township park to increase awareness of mental health issues and build community support—local nonprofits provided resources and free support groups with funds raised aiding mental health services.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Garrettsville Garfield erased a 34—14 deficit to beat Liberty 35—34 at Leopard Stadium, extending its 19-game win streak and ending Liberty's MVAC Grey title hopes.  The Vindicator
