COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Candles were lit Sunday evening at the Jewish Community Center to honor victims and heroes from the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks nearly two years ago. Community leaders said the seven candles—each marking loss, Israel, the people, hostages, heroes, strength and peace—shined with hope as they awaited a possible ceasefire.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown announced parish mergers in the Trumbull and Mahoning deaneries that will become effective Jan. 1. The move pairs Our Lady of Perpetual Help with St. Mary to form Queen of Heaven Parish and merges St. Brendan, St. Christine, and Our Lady of Sorrows into St. Mary Magdalene Parish—services at some worship sites will see adjustments.  Tribune Chronicle
  • 717 Credit Union held its inaugural Blues, Brews and BBQ Festival on Saturday at the Warren Community Ampitheater—thousands enjoyed food, drinks and live blues music and raised $7,500 in donations—and the funds were split equally among local charities including United Way, Game Changers Inc. and the Urban League.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown Area Jewish Federation held a candle-lighting event Sunday evening at the Jewish Community Center to mark nearly two years since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel — community leaders honored victims and hostages while urging the return of those still missing. Speakers shared personal stories and called for peace in Israel.  The Vindicator
  • The Youngstown Fire Department held an open house on Sunday to support National Fire Prevention Week—local residents saw fire safety demonstrations and met firefighters. Chief inspector April Edwards said the event helped children learn about fire safety.  WKBN
  • Poland Township veteran David Thornton, who grew up on Youngstown’s East Side, recalled his service in Vietnam where he was injured by mortar fire and carried shrapnel fragments for life — his actions saved fellow soldiers and earned him honors such as the Purple Heart and Bronze Star — while he shared memories of harsh combat and determined valor.  The Vindicator

  • The 2025 Pink Out Mahoning Valley Music Festival held on Sunday in Austintown Township Park drew about 1,200 attendees—many of whom enjoyed live music, food, and crafts in a day honoring breast cancer survivors—as organizers marked the event's third year.  The Vindicator
  • Café Rosé in Austintown is hosting its annual Halloween Market today — the event runs from noon until 3:00 p.m. and offers handmade decor, gifts, and baked goods along with a pet costume contest starting at 2:00 p.m. with a $5 entry fee and prizes, plus a basket raffle benefiting Campbell Cruelty and Humane Rescue.  WFMJ

  • Youngstown State University’s business school partnered with JCPenney to offer students 30% off professional clothing coupons at the Eastwood Mall on Sunday. The event aims to help students prepare for interviews—an affordable boost in professional wardrobe—and will return next semester at Southern Park Mall.  WKBN
  • Today Oak Hill Collaborative begins its ninth annual Digital Inclusion Week by offering 26 free classes in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Ashtabula counties. A navigating medicare class starts at noon and a digital deliveries lesson begins at 5:30 p.m. — no preregistration is needed.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mines Road in Howland Township is closed today for a road improvement project—covering the stretch between SR 46 and Johnny Cake Road—and will reopen Friday, Nov 14.  WKBN
  • A new mobile steam plant is coming from Virginia to downtown Youngstown to restore heating, cooling and hot water services lost after SOBE Thermal’s equipment was repossessed. A crew will install the new boiler through the weekend, and it will be working by Tuesday—city officials are taking steps to secure essential utility services for residents and businesses.  The Vindicator

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 1,000 people gathered at Eastwood Field on Sunday for an annual breast cancer fundraiser organized by Pink Lights the Way — the event began with a lap honoring survivors and fighters. Organizers raised funds to send care packages to women in treatment and doubled last year’s attendance.  WKBN
