- ➤ On Monday, YPD's K9 Max and YSU's K9 Barkley received bullet and stab-protective vests from nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s (sponsored by Aunt Mimi’s Lemonade Stand started by local children Jordan and Annalise in memory of their late aunt) to boost their on-duty safety. WFMJ
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A new boiler arrived at the SOBE Thermal Energy Systems Plant in downtown Youngstown on October 5 from Virginia and now awaits an Ohio EPA inspection (it will heat and cool 27 downtown buildings after the previous mobile boiler was repossessed). Reg Martin was appointed as receiver by the PUCO to manage the plant. WFMJ
- ➤ Trumbull County Commissioners met Monday with Softbank representatives to discuss a plan where a Lordstown facility will build storage containers for an AI project by OpenAI and Oracle. The facility will show cutting-edge technology by year's end and start full operations in March 2026. WKBN

- ➤ Pat McGlone is painting the largest mural he has ever done on Erie Terminal Place along West Commerce Street—featuring a green background with white outlines of a train and the letters ETP to honor the building’s railroad past. He will start a second mural with Pete the Penguin on a nearby building later this week. WKBN

- ➤ Amy Fluker, a professor at Youngstown State University, is leading a project to digitize over 30,000 records from Warren’s Oakwood Cemetery. The grant-funded project, done with the Trumbull County Historical Society and backed by a $74,795 award, will create a free online database and offer guided tours (to help residents learn about their past). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Ohio Department of Natural Resources approved a deer cull permit for Mill Creek Park by cutting the request from 100 to 50 after a helicopter survey—site visits and survey data showed improvement in vegetation. Park officials said they may reassess the number in the future and will conduct further site visits during the culling program. WKBN
- ➤ Youngstown voters were invited to a candidates forum held Monday night at Union Baptist Church — the event began at 6 p.m. and covered races for mayor, city council president, municipal court, and school board with all candidates confirming their participation. WKBN
- ➤ Two mayoral candidates will face off in a debate hosted by 21 News on Wednesday, October 16th at 2 p.m.—the one-hour event will focus on crime, economic development, and post-ARP strategies while streaming live on multiple 21 News platforms. WFMJ
- ➤ Hubbard Road between Logan Avenue and Albert Street will be closed from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. today for railroad track replacement (detours are posted) so drivers can plan alternate routes. WFMJ
- ➤ Bandy Road is closed from Monday to Friday between Lake Park Boulevard and SR 62 for a culvert replacement. A detour is in place (SR 62, Johnson Road, Lake Park Boulevard) to help drivers avoid the work zone. WKBN
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Foster Poultry Farms is recalling 3,843,040 pounds of chicken corn dogs because wood may be embedded in the batter. The products, made between July 30, 2024 and August 4, were sold in stores in Ohio + other states, and five consumers reported injuries after eating them. WFMJ

- ➤ The Covelli Centre will be converted into an arena using 750 tons of dirt (1.5 million pounds) for the Busch Light PBR Youngstown event scheduled for Feb. 27-28 when 40 top bull riders will compete for Velocity points and a spot in the finals. Tickets are on sale now. WFMJ
