- ➤ A nationally known civil rights leader, Jo Ann Bland, and local business owners Gary and Cindy Koerth received Tuesday's Simeon Booker Award for Courage at the Tyler History Center—Bland marched in 1965 and the Koerths opened their inner city cafe to offer a welcoming space for the community. - ➤ A citizens group that wants to keep the Poland Library branch at its South Main Street location will speak at the Mahoning County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, October 9 at 10 a.m.—the group has over 2,000 petition signatures and urged trustees to stop the relocation. The library board is studying repair costs and alternate sites as rising expenses push for budget changes. WFMJ
- ➤ At the Metroplex Expo Center in Liberty, about 500 baby boomers, older seniors, and caregivers braved heavy rain on Tuesday morning to attend the Boomers & Beyond Senior Expo. - ➤ A two-day living history event will take place at Center Brook Manor in Bloomfield on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—showcasing a Civil War hospital, artifacts, reenactments, and hands-on activities with admission at $10 for adults and $5 for children. - ➤ Today, local groups meet at several venues as the MILL CREEK METROPARKS Recreation Citizens Advisory Committee gathers at 5:30 p.m. at Wick Recreation Center on McCollum Road, LOWELLVILLE VILLAGE COUNCIL and its claims committee convene at 6:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and the MCDONALD BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS assembles at 5:15 p.m. at the municipal building. On Thursday, MAHONING COUNTY COMMISSIONERS will hold board and staff meetings at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., YOUNGSTOWN BOARD OF EDUCATION will host a treasurer search meeting at 4:30 p.m., and MCDONALD BOARD OF EDUCATION meets for records retention at 6:45 a.m. followed by a special board meeting at 7 a.m.—HORIZON SCIENCE ACADEMY BOARD will meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. at 3403 Southern Blvd. The Vindicator
- ➤ Ohio moved a step closer to accepting cryptocurrency for state fees and services last week, and state officials plan to set up strict security measures for digital payments. Frank LaRose (Secretary of State) praised the move and said that the new system will include ways for users to dispute charges just as easily as with traditional transactions. The Vindicator
- ➤ A crew placed a pipe on the SOBE plant boiler on Tuesday while Mayor Tito Brown said the city will rely on the Public Utilities Commission and SOBE Energy Solutions for a long-term heating plan—State Rep. Lauren McNally is checking conversion costs as steam melted a sewer line near downtown, which will cause two blocks of Wick Avenue to be closed from Thursday for a two-week repair. WKBN
- ➤ Lordstown council delayed its vote on a proposed data center ban after residents testified on both sides—issues like noise, safety, and tax abatements were raised. The council will hold a further reading on October 20th to gather more information and continue public input. WFMJ
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Mercy Health has been negotiating with Humana for four months and warned over 10,000 Humana Managed Medicaid members that if an agreement is not reached by December 1, its hospitals, physicians and care centers — including urgent care and ambulatory surgery — will be out-of-network while emergency services remain available. Dr. John Luellen said the talks aim to protect vulnerable patients from losing regular access to care. WFMJ
- ➤ The Ohio Department of Health released an inspection report for Insight Hospital in Warren that found issues with fire alarms, water quality— and its boiler system. The hospital will need to fix these problems and reopen by October 10 to avoid losing Medicare accreditation for both itself and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital. WFMJ
- ➤ Mercy Health patients with Humana Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans may lose access to Mercy Health facilities if a contract is not reached by Dec. 1—over 10,000 patients could be affected as emergency services remain available. Humana says it is working in good faith to find a solution that prevents disruption in care. WKBN

- ➤ A 100-year-old building on Elm Street that has been vacant for about six years will get a $1 million upgrade that includes a convenience store on the ground floor and eight renovated apartments for Youngstown State students.
