COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brandon Clokey, a building designer in Campbell, was named Designer of the Year by the American Institute of Building Design for his work in planning safe, affordable homes—he is the first African American to win the award in the institute's 75-year history—earning him national recognition.  WKBN
  • The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County East Branch on Early Road closed Wednesday and is closed today for electrical work— it will reopen Friday.  WKBN
  • Harvest season has begun as farmers work long hours checking their equipment and urging local drivers to slow down—rural roads now carry more slow-moving tractors, grain carts, and combines. Drivers are advised to pay close attention to signals like flashing amber lights and bright orange triangles to help keep everyone safe.  Tribune Chronicle
  • The Polish Youngstown and Kravitz Deli hosted the 11th annual National Pierogi Day celebration yesterday on Belmont Avenue where residents enjoyed a variety of pierogi, live polka, vodka, beer and limited-edition paczki from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Polish Happy Hour began at 4 p.m.—with a live sing-along by Cleveland’s Polonia Duo—adding festive music to the event.  WKBN
  • Youngstown honors Ohio Nonviolence Week with a peace pole being installed at Wick Park—speakers including Mayor Tito Brown, Councilwoman Samantha Turner and civil rights activist Minnijean Brown-Trickey stressed the local effort. Nonviolence Week ends October 11.  WKBN

  • Bass Pro Shops hosted a national hiring event on Oct. 8—and will hold on-site interviews today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.—while accepting walk-ins and advance applications for seasonal and regular positions.  WKBN

CULTURE NEWS

  • A photo exhibit at Tyler History Center displays nearly 40 portraits that honor Youngstown’s Hispanic community and opened October 3—photographer Tony Nicholas, a professor at Youngstown State University, started the project to show the deep local roots of families who worked in the mills and ran businesses. The exhibit will remain until February while the photos become a permanent part of the center’s collection.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in the Sebring Local School District got free running shoes from the Carl and Josie Scarpitti Foundation—this gift marks the 30th anniversary of Carl Scarpitti’s passing and was arranged by Second Sole, an Ohio-based shoe company that sized the shoes in September.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Owners of 27 properties along Perkins Jones Road in Bazetta will soon be able to connect to a new sewer line installed by Amazon Inc. for its distribution center when the line is inspected this week, and they have up to six months to make the connection; county commissioners approved a $53,375 payment to cover tap-in and health fees—residents must hire contractors to link their homes to the main line.  Tribune Chronicle
  • On Wednesday, a New Middletown man's house was demolished after repeated problems left the yard cluttered with old tires, propane tanks, vehicles and waste — state-funded teams from the Mahoning County Land Bank began cleanup and nearly cleared the lot.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Association said Ohio has a higher percentage of people with dementia compared to the rest of America when experts discussed risks, diagnosis, and new treatments at a community event at Canfield United Methodist Church on Wednesday as part of Youngstown State University’s Wellness for Life series—experts explained how new FDA-approved medications can slow disease progression and urged attendees to sign up for trial match programs linking those with cognitive impairment to research studies.  WKBN

  • Liberty High School’s volleyball team is hosting a fundraiser today during its match against East Palestine—concession proceeds and donations will support Kiera Thigpen’s family while her father recovers from surgery for a blocked abdominal aorta.  WKBN
