- ➤ During Thursday’s meeting, Mahoning County commissioners backed the community effort to keep Poland Library open after supporters submitted over 2,000 signatures amid concerns about costly building repairs—village and township trustees had already passed resolutions supporting the library. The group plans to attend future meetings and gather more support until a final decision is reached. WKBN
- ➤ Fellows Riverside Garden is hosting a free pumpkin carving session today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — carving tools are provided or visitors may bring their own and finished jack-o-lanterns will be on display Sunday for the Pumpkin Walk at Twilight. WKBN

- ➤ The W.D. Packard Concert Band will celebrate its 70th anniversary on Sunday by debuting a new work called We, Are Packard, composed by Jerry Ascione and led by conductor Galen S. Karriker at Packard Music Hall — a sign of the band’s lasting local legacy. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Youngstown band Kitchen Knife Conspiracy signed a deal with independent label Deko Entertainment and will release two albums in 2026—an anniversary reissue of an older record and a new album with many fresh ideas. The band chose this deal for its creative freedom and plans to play local shows on November 1 at Westside Bowl and November 8 in Erie. The Vindicator

- ➤ Ohio’s job department reported last Thursday that 46,114 unemployment claims were filed from September 28 to October 4—initial claims increased by 677 while continued claims dropped by 398, and the state's August unemployment rate stood at 5% compared to 4.3% nationally. The Vindicator
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Four candidates, including three who already serve, are running for three seats on the South Range Board of Education and promise to manage a nearly $15 million budget with more care and clear talks. They will work to lower costs, plan for future repairs, and add programs to ready students for jobs plus keep schools safe. The Vindicator
- ➤ YSU art students are teaming with the Western Reserve Port Authority and art professor Dragana Crnjak to create new murals for City Centre One’s elevator spaces—students will begin designing the murals in two weeks to build hands-on skills and highlight local business identities. The project will offer an immersive experience for building visitors and add a creative touch to the elevator rides. WFMJ
- ➤ School officials in the Mahoning Valley are worried that two Ohio House bills, which passed with bipartisan support, will reduce funding by changing property tax rules for emergency levies and the 20-mill floor. Both Liberty local schools and Poland district may face tighter budgets—Poland Superintendent Hockenberry warned of a potential $6.9 million loss if these changes take effect. WFMJ

- ➤ Wick Properties LLC has sued Youngstown after construction work on 20 Federal Place damaged its stairwell—alleging a violation of an easement during demolition and asbestos remediation. - ➤ SOBE Concerned Citizens asked Ohio EPA to cancel a 10-year air pollution permit for SOBE Thermal Energy's pyrolysis process after over 220 Youngstown residents signed a letter on Oct.6 — the permit may be sold during receivership without proper public input. Youngstown City Council filed an appeal while the group requested a plant inspection to check for safety risks. WKBN

- ➤ The 51st Annual Youngstown Peace Race will take place on Sunday, October 12 and will include a two-mile walk/run, 10k run, 25k run starting at 8:30 a.m. near downtown, a 200-meter kids fun run for children 10 and under, and a virtual option — road closures in Mill Creek Park will affect parts of the route.
