COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Trumbull County Tourism Board won two awards at the Ohio Conference on Travel—recognizing its digital marketing campaign and local blog series that promote events like the 60-Mile Yard Sale and seasonal attractions.  WKBN
  • Bonnie Burdman from the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation said she looks forward to more peace in the region after a ceasefire with Hamas was confirmed, and noted that efforts to return hostages' remains will soon be underway. Celebrations continue in Israel and among Jewish communities worldwide—families separated for over two years are reuniting.  WKBN
  • Lisa Long, CEO of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, said today that 20 Israeli hostages kidnapped over two years ago will soon return to their families as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas — while 28 others who died in captivity are being mourned.  WFMJ
  • The Dink Yard opened Monday in Niles inside the Eastwood Mall Complex — it offers six indoor pickleball courts with prices ranging from $85 a month to $20 per hour. Owners Skyler and Lindsay Coulter plan to franchise the facility, which is open seven days a week.  WKBN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the long-vacant Perkins restaurant building at 587 E. Main St. in Canfield will be demolished to make way for a new Dairy Queen—property owner Christine Smith confirmed. The Smith family, which bought the property for $600,000 in April 2021, will break ground on the restaurant after demolition.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • A veterans nonprofit will sponsor Modern Warrior Live at Robins Theatre on Veterans Day. The event, featuring Warren native Jaymes Poling’s real military journey with music and narration—set to begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11—will offer free tickets by reservation.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Girard City Schools leaders released a five-year forecast showing nearly $1 million less in state funding as enrollment dropped and property values increased, making each pupil appear wealthier to the state. Board members will review the forecast in February and aim to balance the budget by August 2026—officials say that new housing and academic investment may help stabilize enrollment.  WFMJ
  • Marissa Miller, a Brookfield teacher diagnosed with triple‐negative breast cancer in 2023, returned to the classroom after two years of treatment and now resumes teaching the same students—she also leads projects like designing pink‐out shirts to mark breast cancer awareness. This return marks a new phase in her career as she helps students learn practical skills.  WKBN
  • Youngstown State University archaeology students traveled to Moundsville, West Virginia for West Virginia Archaeology Day at the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, where twelve students joined instructor Thomas Delvaux. They presented an artifact display + a photo board of their projects and trips while also curating artifacts + serving as docents at the museum.  WFMJ

  • Governor DeWine’s emergency order bans sales of intoxicating hemp products starting midnight Monday, and local store Dubz in Hubbard—where such items make up 25-30% of sales—has marked products at 30% to cope with dwindling stock + expects lawmakers to quickly address childproof packaging and testing standards.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, the 31st annual Pink Ribbon Tea for Breast Cancer Survivors was held at Waypoint 4180, drawing about 500 survivors, fighters, and supporters. Local cardiologist Dr. Paul Wright urged the crowd to seek life-changing experiences while Maureen Collins uplifted attendees with live music—reminding everyone that hope and love guide recovery.  The Vindicator
  • For thousands of Medicare Advantage customers using Mercy Health, the agreement with Humana will expire on Dec. 1 — leaving a gap before open enrollment begins on Jan. 1 and prompting agents to advise customers to consult knowledgeable brokers to explore coverage options if no new deal is reached.  WKBN
