  • Former MLB pitcher Dave Dravecky returned to the Mahoning Valley on Wednesday at the DeYor Performing Arts Center where he spoke for 75 minutes and stayed over three hours in the lobby to chat with fans—he recalled his baseball career, battle with cancer and growing up in the area while saying it felt good to be home.  Tribune Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vallourec officials contacted Girard Mayor Mark Zuppo to dispel rumors of layoffs after pausing operations for a precautionary safety stand-down—officials said the pause was for safety and not related to business performance. Operations will resume on Monday, Oct. 20 as strong demand keeps the need for skilled workers high.  WKBN
  • A new Grocery Outlet opened in Austintown on Thursday at the former JCPenney site on Mahoning Avenue—owned by the same couple running stores in Boardman and New Castle. The store held a ribbon cutting and donation ceremony at 10 a.m. and gave Bliss Buck gift cards to the first 100 customers when doors opened at 8 a.m.  WKBN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Legally blind tattoo artist Nicole Morrone creates detailed, colorful work at Trademarked Society Tattoo in Poland and has won several awards for her art—she now embraces her visual impairment as part of her brand and is booked months out.  WKBN
  • Ghost Walk returns with a newspaper theme today at First Presbyterian Church in Warren—lantern guides and costumed actors lead groups through eerie local sites and historical stories from Trumbull County. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 6 to 12, and the event runs through Oct. 25.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lowellville High School senior Nathan Yon was named Student Athlete of the Week—he will earn 20 varsity letters by graduation while setting school records in track and cross country, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and completing over 150 volunteer hours.  WKBN
  • Choffin Career & Technical Center juniors watched Nova the Rebel’s debut hip-hop video 'Black Inventors' in the Main Commons — the video was filmed at the school with students helping on hair design and music production — and the teaching artist said the project shows how students can reach their creative goals.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Heritage Manor Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in Youngstown was named one of the best small nursing homes in the United States — an honor from Newsweek that places it among Ohio's top five — and it offers 72 beds for both short- and long-term care.  WFMJ
  • Birdfish Brewing Company in Columbiana hosted its 9th annual Blueberry Oatmeal Outstanding Breakfast Stout Tapping on Thursday at 4 p.m.—all proceeds went to the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center. The event had the Mahoning Valley Flight Crew guest bartending, featured raffle baskets and a food truck from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and ended at 9 p.m. after raising over $20,000 since 2016.  WKBN
  • Mahoning County Public Health’s commissioner Ryan Tekac said the Black infant mortality rate was about four times higher than that for white infants due to limited prenatal care and very few Black OBGYNs available—health officials in Youngstown met Thursday to discuss plans to increase Black gynecologists and improve support for new mothers and fathers. The symposium brought together local health experts and officials to address the disparities and spark changes in maternal and infant care.  WFMJ
  • Researchers at the University of Kentucky are starting a long-term study to learn how a train accident in East Palestine affected the health of 400 residents— they will compare these residents with a group from Guernsey County to understand ongoing issues, including effects on children.  WKBN

  • WKBN Power Rankings show local high school teams remain unbeaten after wins last Friday with Canfield, Girard, McDonald, and Crestview leading the pack. Cardinal Mooney enters the top ten and will close its season today while McDonald hosts Springfield in the Game of the Week—teams aim to clinch playoff spots with imminent conference title matchups.  WKBN
  • Poland boys soccer team dominated the sectional final at Dave Pavlansky Field on Wednesday when they beat Conneaut 12-0, with the game called at halftime due to the mercy rule—Coach Brian Garcar said the Bulldogs are proud and now await their district semifinal matchup.  The Vindicator
