BUSINESS NEWS

  • Youngstown Business Incubator will hold its sixth Shark Tank event on October 23 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman—four finalist companies will pitch to celebrity sharks in a fundraiser that will offer a $10,000 shark prize, a $5,000 audience award, and $5,000 for every pitching company. The public will be invited as the event will feature a buffet and blue carpet pre-show from 5 to 6:30 p.m.—with the main stage show starting at 6:30 p.m.  WKBN

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday at Valley Christian High School, students and family honored 15-year-old Amya Monserrat—fatally shot on April 15 on the South Side after her birthday party—while her mother, Jasmine Morris, said the tribute is a meaningful way to remember her and that she has started the Amya Marie Foundation to help those affected by gun violence.  WKBN

CULTURE NEWS

  • YOUNGSTOWN LOOP Youngstown Arts + Culture Center invites residents from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer, and Lawrence Counties to submit art pieces that capture a local day, created between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 17. Selected works will be chosen by curators and must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 19 — either individually or by groups.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown State University received nearly $675,000 from a state grant—money that will help create a Career Pathway Support Network for middle and high school students. The program will expand access to career and technical training to meet growing local demand.  WKBN
  • Dom Fonce, an instructor at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Adult Career Center in Canfield, has been named Adult Educator of the Year for Northeast Ohio — he will be honored at the upcoming Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education Conference in Columbus, reflecting his role in growing the adult diploma program from 14 to 47 graduates.  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A gas line replacement project will begin on Monday along state Routes 62 and 7 in Hubbard, causing lane closures and slow traffic while businesses remain open and work is expected to last a couple months—police chief Robert Thompson reported.  WKBN
  • ODOT held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Howland to mark the diverging diamond project finishing ahead of schedule — the project cost $20 million, started in 2023, and helps keep drivers safe by stopping left turns against oncoming traffic.  WKBN
  • A container housing project is under construction at Hillman in Warren on the South Side to offer temporary living spaces for veterans who will stay up to nine months—$1.2 million in funds from the Veterans Administration, county commissioners and American Rescue Plan are backing the project.  WKBN
  • Gov. Mike DeWine ordered flags of the United States and state flags to be flown at half-staff at all public buildings and grounds in Mahoning County through sunset on the day of trooper Nicholas P. Cayton's funeral to honor his service. White House Fruit Farm’s fall festival today will include a benefit—musician Chase Welch will perform from noon to 3 p.m.—with all tips going to Cayton's family.  The Vindicator
  • Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered U.S. and state flags to fly at half-staff at public buildings and select venues in Mahoning County and the statehouse until sunset on the day of Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton's funeral—Cayton died in a crash on Route 11—as White House Fruit Farm's fall festival today will include a benefit with musician Chase Welch performing from noon to 3 p.m. to support his family.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Youngstown State University’s Bowling Team began its season Friday with a home tournament renamed in honor of former head coach Chelsea Gilliam (who died from breast cancer last August). The event (the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic) is ongoing today and will conclude Sunday.  WKBN
