COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its annual indoor Trunk-or-Treat event from (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) because of poor weather, with festivities that include candy, costumes and games. All families are welcome, but only children 12 and under in costume can join the Trunk-or-Treat activities.  WFMJ
  • A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22nd at YSU’s Beeghly Center (224 West Spring St.) in honor of Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas Cayton, who died while assisting a disabled tractor-trailer in Canfield. Seating will begin at noon (with the service starting at 1 p.m.) and the event is open to the public.  WFMJ
  • Warren native Bob Kent enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve before graduation when funds were short and spent six months as a boiler technician on a destroyer escort, sailing from New York City to the Mediterranean. He faced 40-foot waves during a hurricane—his journey during the Cuban missile crisis and later work teaching new sailors remains a proud part of local history.  Tribune Chronicle
  • A Celebration of Life service for Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton will take place Wednesday at Youngstown State University’s Beeghly Center—with doors opening at noon and the service starting at 1 p.m.—to honor Cayton, who died in the line of duty after his cruiser was struck while assisting a disabled tractor-trailer, and the event is open to the public.  The Vindicator
  • Every Dog Matters is partnering with Boardman Subaru for its 7th annual Dog Adoption event, which runs until 3:00 p.m. at the dealership—guests will meet at least five pups and enjoy a bake sale fundraiser.  WFMJ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Weathersfield Fire Department fought a large brush fire that started around 3 p.m. Saturday off Third Street (near Interstate 80) and burned tires and brush with dark smoke seen on State Route 46, and one bystander got a minor injury from smoke (and was treated on scene).  WKBN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Laura Altobelli, a longtime caretaker at the Ward-Thomas Estate in Niles, led a team that cleared the overgrown garden and repaired the glass greenhouse last fall, restoring much of its former charm. She and her friend Brittany Jarrett hosted events to share the estate’s revival + now seek more volunteers and funds to keep it thriving.  WKBN
  • Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society members display their art at the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Art Gallery — the exhibit shows works that capture nature and everyday life and will be available through Dec. 26.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Range High School seniors honored influential teachers on Friday by leaving class to thank them with custom t-shirts—this surprise was part of a senior impact project that celebrated the bond between students and their educators.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Part of Poland Avenue is closed today between Powersdale and Union as railroad crews rebuild the at-grade crossing at Youngstown and Southern Railroad — the work is expected to finish by Oct. 29 while local traffic will be maintained.  WKBN

HEALTH NEWS

  • RainbowsR4Ever hosts a Pink Art Show at Provence Mills Event Center in Girard that brings together local artists, breast cancer survivors and supporters. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and features speakers, food vendors and a sneaker raffle to raise funds.  WFMJ
  • Breast cancer survivors and those fighting the disease gathered Sunday at Eastwood Mall center court in Niles to receive a special honor, with more than 35 women recognized for their strength. The event was sponsored by Zeta Tau Alpha and Cheer Time Athletics and featured music from local singers — donations were made to Pink Lights the Way and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center to support early detection.  Tribune Chronicle
