- ➤ Boardman businesses in three plazas on Route 224 will host a free trick-or-treat event with costume contests for kids and dogs starting at noon this Saturday. The event, organized by One Hot Cookie + friends at Spruce, revives a local Halloween tradition paused during the pandemic. WKBN
- ➤ Local youth football leaders in Canfield remember fallen trooper Nick Cayton—who coached the Little Cardinals and died last Thursday—as they plan to honor him with a moment of silence at Sunday's Super Bowl. - ➤ GSP Land Holdings was awarded a $500K grant from JobsOhio to fund the construction of a 25,000-square-foot industrial spec building on Silica Road in Austintown - the project also gets a 10-year, 60%-property tax abatement from the township to help attract new industrial tenants. This effort reflects ongoing plans to boost local economic activity in the Mahoning Valley. WKBN

- ➤ Humane agents with Animal Charity seized 21 cats from a West Side home on Monday as county officials and housing code enforcement officers investigated poor conditions at 100 South Maryland Avenue — the property was red tagged and deemed uninhabitable until repairs were made. WKBN
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A local restoration project is underway at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown—longtime parishioner George Schuler is upholding a family tradition by replacing the trim and sealing the plexiglass that protects the stained glass windows. Work began a few weeks ago and will finish in about one to two weeks. WKBN
- ➤ The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and the Stambaugh Auditorium Association have named Erik Ochsner as the new music director; he will be formally welcomed during a Jan. 25 performance. Ochsner—who has conducted in more than 50 cities worldwide—will lead the orchestra in upcoming shows including the Home for the Holidays opener on Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. WFMJ

- ➤ Youngstown City School District held its state of the schools address Monday night at 5 p.m. at East High School on 474 Bennington Ave—Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor discussed school achievements, the planned consolidation of East and Chaney High Schools into Youngstown Unified, and changes in district operations open to the public. - ➤ Youngstown State University professor Robert Korenic was awarded a $100k grant to purchase new programmable logic controller equipment that will enhance automation training for students. The equipment will be ordered soon and added to courses in fall—bridging hands-on learning with career preparation in industrial automation. WFMJ

- ➤ City leaders held a public meeting on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Michael Kusalaba Library on Mahoning Avenue—presenting their plan to reduce stormwater pollution and protect water quality. WKBN
