- ➤ Alta Care Group celebrated 50 years of service at an all-staff event in Youngstown and has grown from one office in 1976 to eight health sites and 21 Head Start programs serving nearly 10,000 people each year—offering mental health and education support for young residents. WKBN
- ➤ Students and staff from Williamson College of Business Administration volunteered on Friday at a Boardman resource center to pack food, hygiene products, clothing, and school supplies for local students in need as part of United Way of Youngstown & Mahoning Valley's annual United We Care Day—nearly 80 participants helped with sorting and packing vital items. - ➤ An updated list shows Halloween trick or treat times for communities in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer and Lawrence counties. Some events run from as early as today in Hanoverton and New Wilmington and extend to October 30, 31 and November 1 — more times will be added as communities finalize their schedules. WKBN
- ➤ On Tuesday, Oct. 28, more than 300 Youngstown community volunteers will pack over 125,000 meals at the United Way Volunteer Center in Boardman using a split schedule—soup will be packed from 9:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m. and oatmeal from 1 p.m.—3 p.m.—as part of a partnership with Direction Home and Meals of Hope. - ➤ On Thursday evening, the 6th annual YBI Shark Tank event took place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman with 750 attendees as local entrepreneurs pitched their ideas to a panel of investors. Barb Ewing unveiled YBI's new logo and motto while judges including RT Vernal and Rob Komara selected former NASA scientist Zach Courtright’s LeapFast to receive a $10,000 award. The Vindicator
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Humane agents with Animal Charity of Ohio reported a sharp rise in animal abuse and neglect cases—over 20 animals needed help last Thursday—and they will hold an adoption event today at Boardman Subaru from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the dealership covering all adoption fees. WKBN
- ➤ Youngstown native NBA player Terry Rozier was arrested on Thursday in a federal gambling probe that charged him along with over 30 others for allegedly using NBA inside information to fix bets—he has been released on specific conditions as the investigation continues. The Vindicator

- ➤ Trumbull County selected twenty young leaders for the 2025 Class of Twenty Under 20 based on leadership, academics and volunteer work—nominees were chosen from 65 submissions across 10 school districts. - ➤ The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will receive a $10,000 gift from Carnegie Corporation of New York in January 2026—honoring the legacy of Carnegie Libraries and Andrew Carnegie’s commitment to public learning. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ SNAP benefits for 46,000 Mahoning County households are at risk in November if the shutdown is not resolved by Nov. 1—local officials say that while staff will continue to take applications, no benefits will be issued until a federal decision is made. Local groups are already working to provide food support as many families rely on these benefits to put food on the table. WKBN
- ➤ The City of Youngstown has filed a permit application to improve Spring Commons Park and upgrade the West Avenue canoe and kayak launches — the plan details new floating docks, an improved trail, better parking, picnic areas, concrete walkways, stone retaining walls, and a new restroom. The application also includes planned renovations for the nearby B&O Station on Mahoning Avenue. WFMJ
