COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Western Reserve Transit Authority announced the 2025 Holiday Lights Awards winners, naming 10 nonprofits to be featured in a regional campaign — one of which will be selected as Nonprofit of the Year by public vote. The winners will be honored at a special dinner on November 17 at the B&O Station Banquet Hall.  WKBN
  • The Brightside Project is handing out crisis relief food bags for SNAP recipients today from 4 to 6 p.m. at its Salem location—1909 N. Ellsworth Ave.—and will do so again next Wednesday; children of federal workers may get a bag if they bring proof of SNAP benefits.  WKBN
  • Youngstown State University’s Bitonte College of Health and Human Services runs the Walk with a Doc program at Southern Park Mall from 10 to 11 a.m. on the first Thursday of each month—participants begin with a short talk on lung health before joining a walk. The Friends of the East Palestine Memorial Public Library will host its annual book sale in the library basement at 309 N. Market St. on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a preview on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. that costs $5.  The Vindicator
  • MYCAP helps low and moderate-income families keep their heating on during winter by offering an income-based program that began on November 1—located at 1325 Fifth Avenue. The organization continues to support residents facing economic hardships in our community.  WKBN
  • The Mercer County Food Bank launched its annual Truck-full of Hope event at Diehl Chevrolet in Hermitage to collect non-perishable food for local residents in need—Executive Director Rebecca Page said the bank feeds about 13,000 people per month and will accept donations until Dec. 12.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yosteria in Youngstown asked the Design Review Committee on Tuesday to expand its restaurant by adding a bocce court, pavilion, and winery building but had to complete a stormwater study to avoid erosion+blockages. The committee approved the initial plan while the owners transferred their license to start winemaking.  WKBN
  • Movies 8, a discount movie theater in Boardman, will close on Dec. 31 because it does not have enough funds. Paige DeCiancio confirmed the shutdown on Facebook—movie fans will soon need to look for other low-cost options.  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Boardman Schools passed a 6-mill levy renewal with 3,580 votes (50.6% approval) on November 4 while a 5.9-mill proposal was rejected by 3,655 voters (50.7% disapproval). State lawmakers overrode a veto to ban emergency tax levies starting January 1, leaving the district with more financial uncertainty.  WFMJ
  • New faces will join school boards in Trumbull County as unofficial results show Rachael Rankin and Jae Leeworthy will join Tonya Kline on the Newton Falls board while Scott Strain and Zak Steiner replace Sue Ellen Harris Davis in Girard—Carol Young will join two incumbents on the Trumbull County Educational Service Center board.  Tribune Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Vincent de Paul Society of Northeast Ohio will host the Akron Children’s Mobile Care Unit at its Thrift and Furniture Store parking area in Warren today from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The mobile clinic will offer pediatric care for children from birth to 21 and accepts walk-ins + nearby partners will also provide Head Start enrollment and free children’s books.  WFMJ
