- ➤ WRTA has named 10 local nonprofits for its 2025 Holiday Lights Awards—recognizing their commitment to the Mahoning Valley community. Winners will be honored at a dinner on Nov 17 at B&O Station Banquet Hall and one organization will be named Non-Profit of the Year with a TV ad campaign and a $1,000 donation from First National Bank—cementing the awards’ impact. - ➤ Menards has started a holiday toy drive where unwrapped presents can be dropped off at the exit drop boxes until Dec. 15. All toys will be donated to Toys for Toys in Vienna — shoppers can also view the Enchanted Forest Christmas display for children. WKBN

- ➤ A Chicago-based law firm is reaching out to Ultium Cells workers in Lordstown as it investigates potential WARN Act violations ahead of planned layoffs on Jan. 5. The company said it will cut 1,334 hourly jobs—most for battery assembly, quality, and materials—with nearly 850 layoffs expected to be temporary. WFMJ
- ➤ An 18-year-old entrepreneur from Pittsburgh opened Sole Gallery at Southern Park Mall in Boardman, operating from the former Yankee Candle space where the store buys, sells, and trades sneakers including the popular Yeezy 350—he chose the spot for its 70% lower rent and expects strong business during the busy holiday season. - ➤ Award-winning author and producer Andrew Och, known as The First Ladies Man, delivered a 90-minute lecture at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor Monday afternoon where he explained the roles of 10 first ladies during wartime. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Flying HIGH Inc. and Ohio Means Jobs will host a job fair for workers laid off from the Ultium Cells plant on Tuesday, November 18 at the library on Kent State University's Trumbull County campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—Ten employers are expected to attend and may offer training at Flying HIGH's Professional Development Center to help workers gain new skills. - ➤ The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County announced its 2025 Annual Campaign to transform the Michael Kusalaba Library on Mahoning Avenue into a Family Place Library – a new space that will host a five-week workshop for parents and children, offer special collections and online resources to boost early literacy. Donations received this year will directly fund the changes and make this the first library of its kind in the valley. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Walker Mill Road in Boardman reopened after an 86 year old bridge over Yellow Creek was replaced—federal funds supported the project that was delayed by repairs to another bridge and a garbage truck crash last March, and drivers can now travel from South Avenue to North Lima Road. WKBN
- ➤ The City of Girard has been approved for a $547,231 loan at 4.80% over five years from the Ohio Water Development Authority to design safety improvements to Upper Girard Lake Dam—work that will include upgrades to the emergency spillway and toe drain to meet state requirements. This loan is one of 11 projects funded with $11.7 million to improve drinking water and wastewater infrastructure. WFMJ
- ➤ Work has started in Jackson Township on a $6.2 million roundabout at the Bailey Road intersection on Mahoning Avenue — the project will rebuild a section of Mahoning Avenue between Route 45 and Duck Creek Road to improve traffic flow and safety and is set to finish in about a year. WKBN
- ➤ Experts warn that HEAP may lose its funding if the shutdown continues, which could push heating costs up by over 7%. In Ohio, 73,000 households depend on HEAP and MYCAP director Jennifer Yereb (Mahoning Valley) said that although around 2,000 people used the program last year, service remains stable. WFMJ

- ➤ Akron Children’s Hospital debuted its new mobile care unit on Wednesday in Warren—this 40-foot clinic has two exam rooms for well-child visits, immunizations, and non-emergency care. The unit will visit different locations in the tri-county area and will be at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. WKBN

- ➤ Sunshine-Warren Homes is partnering with 7 17 Credit Union to let tenants who have rented for at least 20 years buy their homes with three-year mortgage loans that match their current rent—about 10 to 15 qualifying tenants learned more during a luncheon at Enzo’s Restaurant. WKBN
