COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, Warren Family Mission held an emergency food giveaway in heavy rain, distributing over 500 bags to families who had lost SNAP benefits due to a government shutdown—local groups and volunteers helped supply the groceries normally provided by federal aid. Councilman Todd Johnson proposed using $25,000 in city funds to offer $50 food vouchers to 500 families with a vote set for Wednesday, and the mobile market will begin stops early next week if approved.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Cedars West End on Steel Street in Youngstown will host the Turkey-Eve Extravaganza on November 23 with five bands and a 50/50 raffle—guests can pay a $10 cover charge or donate two non-perishable food items to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley—and live music will start at 7 p.m.  WFMJ
  • Nearly 30 people toured Poland Library on Friday morning and saw its deteriorating condition, sparking concerns about its future; officials said over $250,000 has been spent on repairs so far and a full renovation may cost about $7.5 million (roughly half the cost of building a new branch).  WKBN
  • Animal Charity of Ohio at 8469 Southern Boulevard in Boardman is hosting two events—Cornerstone Caregiving Adoption Event and Fall Community Day. The adoption event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with senior pet fees reduced to $50 in honor of Veterans Day while Fall Community Day from noon until 3 p.m. will let residents meet staff, donate, and enjoy hot dogs and hamburgers.  WKBN
  • DeSalvo Construction announced its partnership with the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation for the Giving Tuesday campaign starting Nov. 10; the company will match every donation up to $25,000 with 100% of funds staying local (benefiting programs in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer, and Lawrence) until Dec. 5.  WFMJ
  • On June 29, the Mahoning Valley Corvette Club held its car show at Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown and donated $12,950 from event proceeds to local charities. The club also hosted a car show at the Packard Museum in Warren on July 26 — it earned $5,492 from that event that will be added to its charitable fund.  The Vindicator
  • United Way of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley is packing rapid response meal kits with shelf-stable food to help families when November SNAP benefits were delayed. Donor funding helped plan 2,500 kits + volunteers will pack them Tuesday for direct delivery through partner schools.  WKBN
  • 11-year-old Liam from Illinois ran to honor fallen Trooper Nicholas Cayton, who was killed last month after his patrol cruiser was hit on State Route 11 in Canfield — he joined Run 4 Heroes as one of nine youth runners paying tribute to his community's hero.  WKBN
  • Buhl Park is giving local residents a chance to win a customized lighted tree for its holiday display if they donate $25 — park officials will contact the winner while families enjoy a festive scene among 60 trees along Lake Julia.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mahoning Valley dancers Nicole Xides and Svetha Nallapaneni from Canfield and Howland will perform in the Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular, which runs through Jan. 5 (marking their second season in a show that celebrates 100 years of holiday tradition).  WKBN
  • Mahoning Valley Historical Society announced the 17th Memories of Christmas Past exhibit will open at the Arms Family Museum on November 15 from noon to 4 p.m. and run until December 31. The three-floor exhibit features seven themed rooms with vintage holiday decor, a hands-on Santa’s Village, and gift shops, plus extended hours on Twilight Thursdays starting December 4 and a Twilight Tuesday on December 23 (admission is $10 for adults).  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The PNC Foundation approved a two-year $100,000 workforce development grant for the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber to remove employment barriers — like transportation, childcare, and mental health challenges — and help connect Valley residents with job opportunities. The funding builds on past support that aimed to expand local talent through community and business partnerships.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Education Insider named Dr. Jeremy Batchelor as one of the nation’s top 10 superintendents for 2025—recognizing his data-driven leadership and focus on school safety. A native of Youngstown, Batchelor has boosted academic performance and district growth since he became superintendent in August 2023.  WKBN

SPORTS NEWS

  • West Branch advanced to round three in the playoffs with a 35-14 win over Norton on Friday night — they will now face No.1 Perry after that team defeated NDCL 26-6.  WKBN
