COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, Cortland held a ceremony indoors at Cortland Christian Church after rain forced a change of plans—over 40 people attended as speakers honored veterans with special pins, including a tribute to a Korean War veteran. The event recognized the service and sacrifice of those who served in past wars.  Tribune Chronicle
  • The Mahoning Valley Irish Festival hosted a Christmas in Killarney event on Sunday at Penguin City Brewing—featuring live music from the Fiddle Chicks, a festive marketplace of local vendors, and Santa Claus giving gifts to the first 200 children to support the Potential Development School for autism.  WFMJ
  • Habitat for Humanity and WKBN rehabilitated a house for the Rodriguez family and dedicated it today in a ceremony that included a tour and remarks from Princess Rodriguez—highlighting local volunteer efforts. Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley will now work on a Trumbull County project and is searching for new partner homeowners.  WKBN
  • Pioneer Trails Tree Farm in Poland hosted a Trees for Troops event celebrating 30 years of donating Christmas trees to soldiers who miss home during the holidays—veterans, Girl Scouts and local volunteers helped cut eight trees and prepared ornaments and letters to be shipped with the trees.  WFMJ
  • Mark Japuncha, a Howland graduate, enlisted in 1987 and spent 24 years in the Air Force Reserve, retiring as a Master Sergeant before joining the sheriff’s offices in Trumbull and Portage counties+ his career followed a family tradition and included overseas tours and extra duties after 9/11.  Tribune Chronicle
  • In honor of Veterans Day celebrations tomorrow, the Braceville 250 Committee hosted a Sunday program at the town hall that focused on Vietnam-era veterans. Local veterans including Silver Star recipient Terry Shavers+Revolutionary War historian Rick Nelson were honored, and three Vietnam veterans received a pin+certificate from DAR members.  Tribune Chronicle
  • On Sunday, hundreds gathered at Penguin City Brewing Co. for the fourth annual Christmas in Killarney craft show—part of the Mahoning Valley Irish Festival that hosted 39 vendors, Santa and Ms. Claus, and raised funds for Potential Development, a school for kids with autism. Organizers will hold The Soundcheck, an Irish music event, in February.  WKBN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A USDA directive issued on Saturday forced Ohio and Pennsylvania to switch from full SNAP benefits to a system that reduces payments by 35%, canceling Ohio's plans for full November benefits and stopping Pennsylvania's process to deliver nearly $100 million in full payments. In Ohio, up to $18 million in emergency aid is now in limbo+ state officials are coordinating next steps to address the gap in food assistance.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • As the first snow nears, experts say drivers should check their vehicles for dead batteries, flat tires, and other issues to avoid crashes. Research by AAA shows nearly 46 percent of weather-related incidents occur in cold months — making caution vital.  WKBN

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Fall gives local gardeners a chance to clean up their gardens—removing dead plants, adding compost, and dividing crowded plants to help soil stay healthy for spring. Gardeners are encouraged to store tools safely so they are ready for next year’s growing season.  Tribune Chronicle
