COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is accepting food donations at all 14 branches throughout November and December to support local food banks and community organizations—officials said the collected items will help families in need this winter. Food donations dropped off at any branch will be given to regional food banks, faith-based pantries and other local programs.  WFMJ
  • 21 WFMJ and WBCB launched their 19th annual Feed Our Valley campaign today to collect food and money for Second Harvest Food Bank to fight hunger in the Mahoning Valley. The six‐week campaign (running until Dec. 19) urges local residents and businesses to donate items like cereal, vegetables and soup to help provide meals.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Vallourec will hold a groundbreaking ceremony this afternoon at its Youngstown facility at 2669 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd for a $48 million expansion — which will add a new premium threading line for high-torque connections in the oil market — and create 40 full-time jobs.  WFMJ
  • Suzie's, a well-known hot dog shop with live music, is returning downtown in a new location at Penguin City Brewing Co. on E Federal Street—set to reopen on November 26 with fan-favorite hot dogs served with wild toppings such as Spaghetti O's, crunchy peanut butter and crickets. The Vindys will host a free concert at 8 p.m. with DJ Puff following at 10 p.m.—doors open at 4 p.m. for service.  WKBN
  • Early talks of a billion-dollar data center project in McDonald are underway at the former McDonald Steel facility as a company considers building on a site in the Industrial Park pending cleanup by Applied Partners—expected to finish by the end of the year—and the proposal is projected to create 300 construction and 100 permanent jobs with support from Mayor Ray Lewis.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court refused to review an appeal by Ohio utility companies—upholding a decision that stops an extra fee and saves customers more than $400 million through 2031. The ruling supports the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel claim that extra charges should not burden electric customers.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Medal of Honor recipient PFC Kenneth David from Warren spoke at Springfield Local High School’s auditorium on Monday morning ahead of Veterans Day — the band and choir honored him with a performance of Anchors Aweigh.  WFMJ
  • Two Youngstown State University faculty members are international finalists in the Learning Design Community Awards; Professor Coldren earns recognition for a project that helps students explore challenging topics while instructional designer Faerber-Ovaska is honored for an activity that lets students make real-time teaching decisions. They are among nine finalists chosen by FeedbackFruits, which aims to empower educators using technology.  WFMJ
  • Trumbull Career and Technical Center students are honoring veterans by detailing 10 vehicles all week in the fourth annual Polish for Patriots event to mark Veterans Day. Army veteran Patrick Harnichar thanked the students—each veteran enjoys a free wash and wax.  WKBN

  • Girard’s police chief John Freeman and fire chief Jim Petruzzi have known each other for over 25 years — starting as high school friends and beginning at the McDonald Fire Department. They believe their long history will help the departments work together to benefit the community.  WKBN
