COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The city’s special projects office is accepting donations of artificial Christmas trees from 10 a.m. to noon on Dec. 4 at 34 N Phelps Street to create a festive display at Twisted Roots restaurant. The decorated trees will be given to families in need on Dec. 6—free parking and volunteer help are offered. WKBN
- ➤ The Salvation Army said its food pantries and hot meal programs — serving Northeast and Northwest Ohio — have seen a 100% increase in requests for help as rising prices and SNAP cutbacks have strained many families. WFMJ
- ➤ DeSalvo Construction is partnering with the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation for Giving Tuesday—through Dec. 5 the company will match every donation up to $25,000. The funds will support programs and services for residents across five counties, including senior care and early learning offerings. WKBN
- ➤ On Wednesday, 50 laptops were donated to Youngstown residents who completed the Oak Hill Collaborative’s Hardware 4 Homes program to help them access telehealth, online banking and job applications+ the refurbished devices are meant to reduce the digital divide by providing an affordable connection to the online world. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown State University Theatre will show the musical 'Be More Chill' directed by Adam Day Howard, which mixes modern tech and teen life—drawing on video game and anime themes. The production runs at Spotlight Theater in Bliss Hall starting Friday at 7:30 p.m. until November 23 with tickets priced from $6.50 to $18.50. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Kent State University at Trumbull presents 'Spring Awakening', an eight-performance musical opening today at 7:30 p.m. and running through Nov. 23—its production casts only performers aged 18 and uses coordinated choreography to handle its mature themes safely. The Vindicator
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Lake to River Economic Development Group named Dani Robbins as its new CEO, effective December 1. Robbins (bringing over 20 years of nonprofit and civic experience) will lead the team while working with former interim CEO Alexa Sweeney-Blackann (who will assist during the transition) to boost the group's regional impact. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio State Senator Al Cutrona introduced Senate Bill 322, which would dissolve academic distress commissions to form student support teams for low-performing schools—affecting the Youngstown City School District that has been under commission oversight since 2010. The bill is awaiting assignment to a committee for further hearings. WFMJ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Champion Township and the City of Warren drafted a JEDD agreement to share income tax revenue from the new Mercy Health Emergency Room, with a three-member board set to manage a split that gives 45% to the city and 55% to the township for the first 2½ years then 50/50 until 2065. A public hearing was held on November 12 at 6 p.m. at the Champion Township Community Building, and final approval will come with upcoming board and council votes — a move that may provide an important new revenue stream for both sides. - ➤ Hubbard Township police chief Brenda Freeman honored local and city officers for their quick work saving a life when a suicidal woman was helped off the Interstate 80 bridge last October. Officer Michael Rendziniak asked for assistance and with Sgt. Christopher Moffitt and Sgt. Howard Haynie, the teams worked together—earning high praise for their coordinated response. - ➤ Mines Road between Route 46 and Johnny Cake Road will reopen Friday after a six-week closure for lane improvements—minor work on road striping and traffic signals remains before it is fully ready for holiday shoppers. WKBN
- ➤ Yesterday, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services began distributing partial SNAP benefits in Trumbull County amid the longest federal shutdown. Nearly all recipients — nearly 15,000 people — received less than 65% of their usual funds after a 35% cut, with payments issued in batches over the next few days. WKBN
