COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Junior Civic League will hold its 66th Cinderella Ball at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman on November 28 — a dinner-dance where the African American community in Mahoning Valley gathers around Thanksgiving to raise funds for civic services and youth scholarships.  WKBN
  • Brightside Project has launched its Bright Christmas toy drive by partnering with over 25 local organizations, churches and businesses (including drop-off sites at Salem and Lisbon). The project will host an event on December 13 (for children ages three and up from Columbiana and rural Mahoning County) where Santa and Mrs. Claus will be present to hand out toys.  WFMJ
  • Local businesses along Market Street in Boardman will be featured in the Merry on Market Small Business Crawl from December 12 through December 14 — participants will receive stamp cards for entries in a prize drawing — and organizers say the event will boost support for local shops while winners are announced before Christmas.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shop of Treasures, a family-owned collectibles store, will open its new location at Eastwood Mall on Nov 21 at 10 a.m. The first 50 customers will get door prizes such as sports cards, homemade treats, and a Christmas ornament—storewide discounts and promotions will be offered throughout the day—adding a festive touch to the grand opening.  WKBN
  • First Watch restaurant will open on December 8 in Boardman and will serve breakfast, brunch and lunch daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The restaurant will occupy a 3,500-square-foot space that formerly housed Choolah—featuring a covered patio and bar—and is expected to create 30 new jobs.  WFMJ
  • The Lordstown Veterinary Clinic in Lordstown Village Plaza will close after 40 years of service when its lease expires at the end of January 2026 as the owner retires—patients may retrieve their records in person or by email until January 16, 2026 by calling 330-824-3367.  WFMJ

CRIME NEWS

  • Jason Cooke, founder of Healthy Hearts and Paws, was bitten on his neck on Monday by a rescue dog while he was placing it in its enclosure and needed stitches; he is now pursuing charges against the dog's current owner after the animal was euthanized due to a history of neglect (the dog had suffered injuries from a pronged collar before its rescue).  WKBN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, YSU professors offered feedback on the draft faculty workload policy—covering teaching, performance evaluations and parts of the tenure process. State guidelines require a designated split between teaching and other duties, and the draft will be submitted to the YSU Board of Trustees by Friday.  WKBN
  • Trumbull Career and Technical Center announced a new literacy program called TCTC Tales to inspire young readers and strengthen early learning—kits of seven books with lesson plans will be sent to 20 associate school districts for first through third graders. The program links reading skills with career exploration as part of Ohio’s Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement.  WKBN
  • Volunteers from the PNC Foundation gave new coats to children at Alta Head Start as part of Operation Warm to help them stay warm this winter—supporting kids in need now. PNC will distribute more coats at Monroe Learning Center in Warren on Wednesday—working toward a goal of 400 coats in total.  WKBN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bernie Kosar, the former Browns quarterback from Youngstown, received a new liver transplant at UH Cleveland Medical Center on Monday more than a year after joining the waiting list—he said he is feeling good and ready to enjoy life.  WFMJ
