COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Volunteers from the Mahoning Valley are building and packing emergency food boxes for a giveaway on Saturday at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds—helping feed over 1,000 families. Armstrong employees and a men’s bible study group worked on Thursday to pack the boxes and support the food bank's efforts. WFMJ
- ➤ Downtown Youngstown now displays a tall white spruce donated by Lloyd Mims, Jr. and the Hyshaw Family—cut down by the Parks and Recreation Department from a home on Catalina Avenue; the tree stands at Federal Plaza for the holiday season. WKBN
- ➤ Christmas at the Mill returns to Lanterman's Mill on November 29 and November 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event at Mill Creek Park—featuring chestnuts, festive treats and holiday entertainment, with Santa Claus visiting on November 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.—offers a welcoming holiday tradition for local families. - ➤ The Cover Down Fund will give away 100 Thanksgiving turkeys and pumpkin pies tomorrow at noon to veterans at the Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission—veterans must show valid military identification to participate. WKBN
- ➤ The Purple Cat Disco Garden opened to the public Thursday at 107 W. Federal St. and now serves as a new community spot for The Purple Cat adult day program, featuring live music from The Feral Cats, retail snacks plus handmade art. - ➤ Ohioans filed 5,961 initial unemployment claims from Nov. 9-15, which is 824 fewer than the previous week. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said continued claims reached 42,161—a rise of 253 to a total of 48,122. Tribune Chronicle
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jackson-Milton Local Schools opened a Care Closet for students—funded by a donation from the Bernat Family and support from the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley—to provide food, hygiene products and clothing. WFMJ
- ➤ Students at Western Reserve Elementary held an early Thanksgiving dinner for veterans and first responders last Thursday. The student government served turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and green bean casserole as their first project of the year. WFMJ
- ➤ The YSU board of trustees unanimously accepted nearly 13 acres in Steubenville that once housed Eastern Gateway Community College—this move sets up a new campus, with an open house planned for January and classes expected to start next summer. Tribune Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Youngstown City Council approved a $40 million project to replace nearly 9,000 feet of century-old sewer lines in Mill Creek Park—this work will begin in late December or early January and will close park trails for up to two years to prevent water contamination. WFMJ
