COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local organizations in the Valley are offering free Thanksgiving dinners and food drives to help families this holiday season. For example, the Community Literacy Workforce and Cultural Center in Campbell will serve free meals to the first 250 people on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.—and the Rescue Mission in Youngstown will host a public feast on Thursday with meals available in two time slots.  WKBN
  • On Friday, Trumbull County honored 15 families on National Adoption Day in a ceremony held by County Children Services — one family finalized their adoption that morning. Officials said 14 children remained without permanent homes and 11 adoptions awaited finalization — showing that many kids still seek forever families.  WFMJ
  • On Saturday, cars lined up at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds as the Warren Family Mission distributed over 60,000 pounds of food to feed 1,000 families ahead of Thanksgiving — the giveaway included fruits, vegetables, dairy, and bread — and mission leader Dominic Mararri said the event provided urgent relief to families who waited as early as 2:30 a.m.  WKBN
  • Holiday shoppers filled the Canfield Fairgrounds on Saturday for the Home for the Holidays Craft Show where over 120 vendors sold crafts and children enjoyed a visit with Santa and a basket raffle. Organizers said the proceeds benefited local youth programs — helping fund the Junior Fair and education initiatives—with plans to make the event annual.  WKBN
  • Café Rosé served as the collection site for a Thanksgiving food drive benefiting the Youngstown Community Food Center on Saturday until 5 p.m. The event at 4491 Mahoning Avenue accepted donations of essential holiday items and featured a raffle offering a chance to win a Nintendo Switch 2 with proceeds going to the food center.  WKBN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • 21 News released a list of holiday hours for grocery stores in the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys, showing which stores will open or close on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve + the list will be updated as more details come in.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three murals painted by YSU students in 2020 were added to the Murals Across Ohio list ahead of the United States 250th birthday when YSU faculty and students applied a special decal to the Andrews Avenue Memory Mural on Friday — a move that highlights local art and the university's art department.  WFMJ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Japanese company SoftBank will invest $3 billion to overhaul the Foxconn facility in Lordstown and retool it for manufacturing modular data center equipment for OpenAI’s upcoming AI centers. Local officials praised the plan as transformational for the Mahoning Valley economy.  WFMJ
  • The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that low-interest disaster loans are available to small businesses and private nonprofits in Columbiana and Mahoning counties and in Lawrence County in Pennsylvania after a drought that began on September 16th. Eligible organizations may receive up to $2 million for fixed debts and payroll—applications must be submitted online by May 22nd.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Poland School Board voted Saturday to start a search for an interim superintendent—aiming to fill the role by January 1—after approving Superintendent Hockenberry’s retirement and medical leave, with the board contacting the Educational Service Center at 8 a.m. Monday. Meanwhile, Assistant Superintendent Maria Hoffmaster will serve as acting deputy superintendent.  WFMJ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Salem Regional Medical Center hosted a fundraiser gala Friday evening to raise money for its new surgery and outpatient center in Columbiana—Lieutenant Governor Jim Tressel gave the keynote speech as guests enjoyed dinner, live music by The John Reese Trio, and an auction to support the hospital. The event highlighted community efforts to fund critical medical expansion.  WFMJ
