COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Persayus Way Project—an organization helping displaced residents—is collecting new household items like blankets, pillows, cleaning supplies, and bed sets for those affected by the Phoenix House apartment explosion over the weekend. The group is not accepting money and will announce a drop-off day soon.  WFMJ
  • At Canfield Village Middle School, students collected nearly 7,000 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank during their annual drive—surpassing the 4,000-pound goal and involving over 240 student council members who worked hard to support local families in need. This effort highlights the community's strong commitment to fighting food insecurity.  WFMJ
  • Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. received $2.475 million in grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati's Affordable Housing Program for home repairs and down payment help—partnering with Farmers National Bank on a $1.5 million application to repair 84 owner-occupied housing units and with Huntington National Bank and CareSource Reinsurance LLC on a $975,000 application to assist 75 new homebuyers in Mahoning and Columbiana counties.  The Vindicator
  • A benefit concert will take place Saturday, November 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Wickyards to raise funds for the Youngstown Skatepark Association’s plan to build a free public skate park. Admission is $10 and the event will feature live music from local and regional bands + a vendor market, basket raffles and a food truck.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Youngstown Business Incubator completed renovations to its main building at 241 West Federal Street yesterday—expanding workspaces, upgrading technology and adding collaborative areas—and thanked donors through its Building for the Future campaign.  WFMJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Youngstown High School is set to join the United Athletic Conference—if the school board approves the move at Tuesday’s meeting, the school will add football and basketball with a $5,000 startup cost and begin competition in fall 2026. This shift will involve only these sports as part of the new conference arrangements.  WFMJ
  • Students from multiple grades at Western Reserve Elementary held a Thanksgiving Day parade Tuesday by transforming the main hallway into a float route—teacher Samantha Steele said the event tied STEAM lessons together and marked the second annual celebration for the school.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the annual mayor’s interfaith prayer breakfast, local leaders including Mayor Tito Brown and mayor-elect Derrick McDowell gathered at the Byzantine Center in Youngstown for prayer— it celebrated officials and people of different faiths coming together, and the event was organized by the Mahoning Valley Association of Churches.  WKBN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Youngstown State lost 69-65 to Toledo Tuesday night at Zidian Family Arena, with Toledo knocking down seven corner threes late to take the win. Coach Melissa Jackson said the team will rest for Thanksgiving before facing Akron Sunday at noon—hoping to adjust their zone defense—after working on it in practice.  The Vindicator
  • Dathan Hickey will return to the field at Stambaugh Stadium on Saturday at noon in the first-round FCS playoff game versus Yale—marking a full-circle moment after multiple surgeries sidelined him last season. The former Yale player and now YSU defensive back has overcome serious injuries and will lead the Penguins with renewed strength.  The Vindicator
