COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Food Bank said high demand may limit the supply of turkey and ham, forcing the organization to use its funds on other essential holiday foods as it prepares to help about 20,000 families—efforts that could ease the strain on local partners.  WFMJ
  • The St. Edward food pantry in Youngstown helped 82 households early in November and provided Thanksgiving meal boxes to 108 families last week after SNAP unfunding increased local need. The pantry is open every Wednesday from 9—10:30 a.m. to distribute essential items like canned goods, meats, fruits, vegetables, bread, and sometimes sweets.  WKBN
  • Rust City Church is preparing to distribute 600 turkey dinners and 70,000 pounds of food today as part of its fourth annual Give Back Before You Kick Back event—cars have lined up since 11 a.m. for the 6 p.m. giveaway. Church leaders raised over $20,000 in three weeks to fund the event and plan weekly food giveaways.  WFMJ
  • Broadway Recovery Services is hosting its 6th annual Helping Hands Tree and is asking Youngstown residents to purchase essential items from an Amazon Wish List to support recovery homes. The donations — which include winter accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves — will help create a safe and comfortable environment at its Boardman-Canfield Road facility this holiday season.  WFMJ
  • Local groups provided Thanksgiving meals across the Mahoning Valley as nearly 400 people received turkey dinners at St Vincent de Paul in Youngstown and 300 meals were delivered by the Warren Family Mission, with about 450 seniors served by sheriff’s deputies. Volunteers also helped 60 displaced seniors in Austintown—showing strong community support ahead of the holiday.  WFMJ

The Auditor of State’s Special Investigation Unit executed a search warrant at the main Steubenville campus in January 2024 to further investigate the college’s financial practices.  WFMJ
