COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thanksgiving night, an Ellsworth Township family was displaced after their home caught fire on Western Reserve Road and all occupants and pets evacuated safely. On Wednesday night, a Boardman family lost their home to a fire on Montrose Avenue and received financial aid, healthcare — and mental health support from American Red Cross volunteers.  WFMJ
  • Yesterday, the Junior Civic League of Youngstown held its 66th annual Cinderella Ball at Mr. Anthony's Banquet Center in Boardman —Stepping into the Future: A New Era of Elegance— featured 10 debutants with escorts and a new electronic voting system that allowed remote votes to select Miss Cinderella, 1st Attendant and 2nd Attendant by popular vote. Proceeds from the event will fund scholarships, continuing a tradition that resumed successfully after a brief break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  WFMJ
  • Penguin City Brewing Company and partners held a Halloween and holiday fusion event at the Pollock Ballroom on Friday that featured a haunted maze, holiday décor and a visit from Krampus—proceeds benefitted Rebel Rescue Ranch. The event continues tonight from 7 p.m. to midnight and will offer a kid-friendly maze with brunch on November 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a $5 fee.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Linda Barton, owner of Sweet Memories Vintage Tees & Candy in Girard, unveiled an exclusive t-shirt featuring a design for the Roger & Gloria Jones Children's Center for Science & Technology (15 Central Square) on Friday, November 28 that gives back 20% of each sale to the museum. The store will sell the t-shirt in youth and adult sizes from Black Friday through the end of the holiday season.  WFMJ
  • Sweet Memories Vintage Tees and Candy in Girard extended its Black Friday deals that began yesterday into this weekend, offering buy-one-get-one free t-shirts, mystery totes, treats and action figures. The business also announced plans to expand next year with a 4,000-square-foot Golden Age Vintage Marketplace (a tribute to Nathan Darsky) that will include vendor spaces for local sellers.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Township resident Ronald Urchek has spent years searching for who carved a wooden likeness of Thomas Jefferson he found on a roadside stop near his Mecca home—he now plans to get the wood carbon dated and consult local antique experts to learn more about its age.  Tribune Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a recent board meeting, Howland Junior High principal James Kosek presented SmartPass data showing over 41,000 hall passes were issued from September 2024 to April 11 and that reducing passes helped students return to class faster. The system now quickly flags groups of students so staff can step in—measures that improve safety and accountability.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Struthers school officials launched the 'What’s Up with the Wildcats?' program on Oct. 28 to open a direct dialogue between students and administrators. The meeting included student representatives and school leaders who met over pizza—discussing academic topics, extracurriculars, and ways to improve the school environment.  The Vindicator

  • Jim Wilkins retired after 17 years as director of Warren-Trumbull County Public Library and spent 37 years in the library field—his staff will celebrate his retirement on December 6th. The board named Kim Garrett as his successor while Wilkins plans to work in public service.  Tribune Chronicle

  • Ohio State will face Michigan in The Game today as coach Ryan Day aims to build on his playoff success and forget past losses. College football has changed — with new transfer rules and NIL deals — but the historic rivalry still matters deeply to fans.  Tribune Chronicle
