COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Howland Township celebrates the holidays this weekend. In Howland, festivities run Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Orwig Park with food trucks, gingerbread contests, a choir performance + Santa’s arrival, while nearby townships host parades, tree lightings, and concerts.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Angels for Animals is kicking off its 24th Annual Christmas Sale season with a Saturday event at Andrews Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. A Friday early bird sale begins today in Canfield with a $5 donation and free refreshments to support animal welfare.  WFMJ
  • Zion Lutheran Church in Youngstown plans to build a new Hunger Center to meet growing food needs. The church is raising funds and seeking volunteers for a steel building facility that will offer walk-ups or drive-ups and may allow grocery shopping for locals, with an expected opening next holiday season.  WFMJ
  • Mahoning DAR will donate $10,000 to Veterans Haven Facility, a shelter for homeless veterans scheduled to open in 2026. The contribution will be presented during a Dec. 18 event in Canfield — supporting initiatives that furnish living spaces and provide food supplies.  WFMJ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dick's Sporting Goods is relocating to the former Dillard's space in Eastwood Mall for a 72,000 sqft store featuring a House of Cleats (displaying over 400 cleats). Construction is underway and its grand opening is planned for summer 2026 while the current 52,000 sqft store remains open.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Larry Jones has been named interim director at Butler Art Institute — he will work with the Board of Trustees to accelerate the search for a new director and manage daily operations.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Wednesday’s council meeting, Canfield honored the 12U girls softball team for winning district and state titles and advancing to U.S. regionals in Indiana. The council also discussed a fee for smart meter opt-outs to cover extra reading costs and approved several board appointments with terms through Dec. 31.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bristol earned its first win over Windham, 43-34, on Wednesday as junior Lauren Church led with 16 points and coach Randall Ward praised the team's gradual improvement. Windham, now 0-3, prepares to face a tough Maplewood team tonight.  The Vindicator
  • Youngstown State University released a list Wednesday of 19 new Class of 2026 football signees, including 11 defensive players, 7 offensive players and one long snapper (as detailed by the school). Local high schools such as St. Edward and Youngstown East provided several recruits.  The Vindicator
