COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Civil War reenactor Jim Rapone led a year-long effort to replace the missing sword on Warren’s 135-year-old monument and joined Mayor Doug Franklin and veterans at a rededication ceremony Saturday at the Trumbull County Veterans’ Memorial in Courthouse Square. The community hopes the restoration honors their shared history. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ The Michael Kusalaba branch reopened after reconfiguring its space into a Family Place Library with a new children’s area and support services. Programs will include a parent and youth session on Jan. 8 and a Family Place Series starting Jan. 15 at 2859 Mahoning Ave. The Vindicator
- ➤ Newton Falls village council honored four veteran organizations including AMVETS Post 112, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3332, American Legion Post 236 and Army Navy Garrison 271 at a recent meeting. Dan Bryant noted the groups donated over $300,000 to local schools, senior centers and charities. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Local AAUW assembled 325 hygiene kits at the United Way Volunteer Resource Center Saturday for hundreds of girls from East and Chaney middle schools; the kits will be distributed Feb. 14 at East High School as plans move forward to merge the schools (aiming to boost girls’ readiness to learn). - ➤ Dylan’s House awarded $500 grants each to 10 licensed caregivers at Leonard Kirtz School during its winter presentation. The nonprofit, which has given over $28,000 to support care for autistic individuals, plans additional events and new supportive housing projects in Boardman. The Vindicator
- ➤ Yesterday, 40 vendors gathered at Placko Center (33 Sexton St) for a craft show and Christmas Tree Walk that donated trees to those in need. Owner Phil Placko said the center’s large dining hall allowed a bigger event and announced a December breakfast with Santa and spring movie nights. WFMJ
- ➤ Vail’s Voice Foundation organizes a raffle fundraiser featuring seven themed artificial Christmas trees (tickets at $10) at Home Carpet Flooring & Design in Boardman. The drawing, with prizes and a party including Santa, food, and crafts, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday. The Vindicator
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A historical series by the Trumbull County Historical Society retells Henry Clay Frick’s link to the McKinley Memorial Library in downtown Niles. His $50,000 donation in Sept. 1915 and plan to buy 1,000 books (fulfilled by his daughter) created a legacy marked by a bronze bust at the library. Tribune Chronicle
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The city-owned Covelli Centre, Youngstown Amphitheatre, and Wean Park may finish 2025 with an operating loss—its first deficit since 2009—despite strong ticket admission tax revenue from major events; officials expect improved fourth-quarter performance to help close the gap. Tribune Chronicle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ During October and November meetings, the city park board rejected nighttime disc golf at Stevens Park over safety concerns and accepted Riverside Park into the district. Board members also approved bleacher upgrades, $129,800 for track improvements at Waddell Park, and a March gymnastics competition (with park repairs and donations discussed). Tribune Chronicle
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ In high school sports today, teams posted wins in boys basketball, girls basketball, wrestling and swimming. Cardinal Mooney edged Boardman 56 to 50 with Dante Turner scoring 13 — other schools including Alliance and LaBrae recorded standout performances as Howland’s wrestling and swim teams began their seasons with promising results.
