  • Mercy Health Hospitals are hosting a Festival of Trees—raffle tickets available for a decorated Christmas tree with drawings at noon Friday at St. Joseph Warren Hospital on Eastland Ave and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital on Market St while local organizations collect holiday gifts.  Tribune Chronicle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Planet Fitness opened a new gym at Warren Plaza next to Giant Eagle on Wednesday. The club offers 70+ cardio machines, free weights, and modern strength equipment for all fitness levels, and it has hired about 15 staff to serve its new members.  Tribune Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Enbridge Gas Ohio agreed on Dec. 1 to provide $750,000 to SOBE Thermal Energy Systems LLC for leasing or buying a backup boiler — critical for uninterrupted heating and hot water for downtown customers — as part of its settlement over the Realty Tower explosion investigation.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Girard FIRST Robotics Robocats Aptiv Team held its annual winter fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 6 in Girard by winterizing over 60 lawn mowers to raise funds and teach maintenance skills for its upcoming robotics season. Parents helped the 15-year event, which has raised over $4,000 (boosting robotics education).  The Vindicator

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike DeWine signed an executive order today that allocates up to $490,000 in fiscal years 2026 and 2027 to Catholic Charities Regional Agency to provide food and needs assistance for families in Mahoning, Columbiana, and Trumbull counties. Additional funds will support youth and workforce programs at Inspiring Minds.  WFMJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • OPSMA announced the 2025 Division IV and V All-Ohio Teams recognizing local players and coaches. Top honors were given to athletes such as Brayden DeVito (Shelby) for offense and Cincere Johnson (Cleveland Glenville) for defense, with selections spanning first, second, and third teams.  The Vindicator
  • The Jackson-Milton girls basketball team won 44-27 over Newton Falls on Wednesday to start 4-2 this season. Coach Dan Turner said his 10 players are building team chemistry and will host Campbell on Friday.  The Vindicator
  • High school sports scores show Canfield won 56 to 37 over Ursuline with strong scoring from Carly Fleming while Salem edged Minerva 46 to 26 after a big second quarter. Tuesday’s games also saw Lakeview beat Badger and Cardinal Mooney beat Niles, with swimming and bowling results adding to the scoreboard.  The Vindicator
  • The Ohio Prep Sports Media Association released the Divisions II and III All-Ohio football teams on Wednesday — highlighting local Mahoning Valley standouts. Canfield's DJ Erickson earned first-team honors while other area Cardinals, including Enzo Cocca and Landon Shina, were named to the second and third teams.  The Vindicator
