  • At Waypoint 4180 on Saturday, Breakfast With Santa let local children meet Santa, enjoy crafts and music, and raise funds for the Rowan Sweeney Memorial Foundation to build a playground at Boardman Township Park - the foundation raised $140,000 so far and plans Phase I in 2026.  The Vindicator
  • The Vienna community celebrated the holidays last Sunday at three stops including the Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, and Historical Society's Copper Penny Lodge. The event featured a walk-through Candyland, a Toys for Tots drop-off, and holiday treats for local families despite the chilly, wintry weather.  Tribune Chronicle
  • A family of three is rebuilding after a fire gutted their Templeton Road home on Nov. 19. 80-year-old homeowner Jolene Hefner and her niece now live cramped in a one-bedroom house as they face insurance delays and plan temporary housing, relying on community support and past holiday memories.  Tribune Chronicle
  • The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Trumbull County needs foster homes for over 120 rescued dogs after harsh winter weather left many at risk. Seven dogs rescued over the weekend showed signs of dehydration and malnutrition, and six will receive veterinary care Monday.  WFMJ
  • Peace Light for 2025 is free for residents who bring a candle or lantern to JMJ Spiritual Connection (3434 Canfield Road) or St. Nicholas Church (764 Fifth St., Struthers) during regular hours for Advent and Christmas. Sponsored by Scouting America and the Catholic Committee on Scouting, the tradition continues locally.  Tribune Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ohio Goes to the Movies will host more than 250 free film screenings across all 88 counties in 2026 as part of America 250. In Mahoning County, The Deer Hunter will screen at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor.  Tribune Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Ohio Manufacturing Association released its 2025 Manufacturing Counts report on Thursday, showing that manufacturing remains the largest private sector contributor to the economy, boosting jobs & income while reducing industrial emissions.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At a fall commencement on Saturday morning in Beeghly Center, 83-year-old Carol J. Skye earned a bachelor's and an associate degree, marking 65 years since she finished high school. Nearly 900 YSU students received degrees at several campus ceremonies.  The Vindicator
  • Mr. Science, Jason Lindsey, led a holiday science event at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on Saturday. Nearly 50 children & their parents enjoyed interactive experiments that explained electricity, air currents, and gravity while Lindsey promoted his second book.  The Vindicator

SPORTS NEWS

  • At the United Way Holiday Classic Saturday evening, Canfield boys beat Poland (67 to 41) for their ninth win, Fitch and Girard secured victories while Poland girls dominated Struthers (65 to 35). Coaches praised defense and teamwork as local talent shone in these regional matchups.  The Vindicator
  • YSU redshirt junior Rich Rolf scored 13 points as the Penguins beat Thiel 103-52 at Zidian Family Arena on Sunday. After a week off for finals, the team will travel to Moon Township to face Robert Morris on Wednesday before hosting USC-Upstate on Saturday.  Tribune Chronicle
