COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Parents reported that a Saturday toy event at Cardinal Mooney High School disappointed many children after a raffle left them without the free toys they expected. The event, run by Touch Heaven Youth with a focus on religious outreach, sparked criticism from local families and drew over 1,200 attendees.  WFMJ
  • Salvation Army caseworker Kayla Hankins directed volunteers to load bags of toys at the Warren office on Franklin Street SE during Monday morning’s distribution, and a second session is running today so that 1,200 children will receive gifts.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Cover Down Fund received a $3K donation from John J. Cafaro that will provide food vouchers for veterans in the Mahoning Valley through the Mahoning and Trumbull County Veterans Service Commissions this holiday season.  The Vindicator
  • The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul hosts a food drive for non-perishable items dropped off at any branch or at the Food Pantry at Via Mount Carmel; donations will be accepted through December, with a drop-off on Thursday, Dec. 18.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation lit a nine-foot menorah in front of the Jewish Community Center on Dec. 14 to celebrate Hanukkah, with the display located at 505 Gypsy Lane.  WFMJ
  • Canfield Historical Society is selling vintage-style Christmas cards and limited edition prints at Bond House (44 W. Main St) as a fundraiser, using old printing presses that recreate early 1900s craft. Cards cost $12 and prints are $30 with proceeds benefiting the society.  The Vindicator

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Monday's Hubbard Board meeting, Superintendent Soloman congratulated student athletes Addie Sarisky and Haleigh Taylor, who committed to college in gymnastics and softball — while the board also approved donations, a bus sale to the Blue Coats, new coursebooks for next school year, and revised staffing contracts.  Tribune Chronicle
  • On Monday, Dec. 15, students from Crestview and Springfield school districts gathered at a McDonald's in Columbiana for their gift exchange (a 30-year tradition) to donate toys, food, baby items, clothing and school supplies to help each other's community, promoting compassion by ensuring items go to the other district.  WFMJ

  • Local high school sports wrapped up yesterday with boys basketball showing Lisbon overcoming Wellsville 64-53 as AJ Ramgeet and Blaine Barnes scored over 20 points—Marky Nolan led Champion’s 54-52 win over Lordstown, while wrestling matches gave Howland solid victories.  The Vindicator
