COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership is seeking an EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant for five abandoned gas stations while hosting community outreach meetings on Jan. 7 at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library to review draft documents and cleanup alternatives. Residents can share feedback via email, phone or in-person.  The Vindicator
  • Mandi Hopkins, a breast cancer survivor and Meals on Wheels cook, attended the Breakfast with Santa event at the Eugenia Atkinson Recreation Center Saturday morning as families enjoyed festive music, toy giveaways (including skateboards and Bluey toys) and a performance by police Chief Carl Davis in a lighthearted role.  The Vindicator
  • Jimmy's Italian Specialties celebrated customers Sunday with free pizza, cookies, and gift bags for 50 early shoppers—with Santa visiting to greet kids—and will open Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. with Christmas Eve hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  WFMJ
  • For over 30 years, Crestview Middle School students and their peers at Springfield Local Intermediate School shared an annual gift exchange before Christmas. This year they gathered donated toys, food and school supplies at the Columbiana Burger King (helping families in need).  The Vindicator
  • Volunteers from Trumbull County served 2,694 meals at the Warren Family Mission’s annual Christmas dinner in Warren (the weekend before Christmas). They cooked, delivered, and offered face painting and gifts to 350 guests waiting outside to share in the spirit of hope.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Families gathered at the Warren SCOPE Center last Saturday for O.N.E.'s fifth annual Christmas with the Community celebration, enjoying music, hands-on activities and food including pizza and hot chocolate as part of a holiday tradition that brought neighbors together.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Community members donated food and supplies Sunday afternoon at a drive-thru hosted at Modern Methods Brewing Co. on David Grohl Alley in downtown Warren (all items will support local pantries through Second Harvest Food Bank).  The Vindicator

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kwanzaa celebrations begin Friday at New Bethel Baptist Church with a 6 p.m. event featuring music and dancing with the Harambee Youth Organization—additional festivities are planned Saturday at Newport Library, Sunday at Beulah Baptist Church, and Dec. 30 at United Returning Citizens to highlight community stories and cultural films.  Tribune Chronicle
  • Austintown author Nancy Christie invites local readers, bookstores and libraries to celebrate Short Fiction Day on the winter solstice by enjoying brief stories and recognizing the challenge of writing short fiction. The celebration highlights this creative art form and encourages the community to appreciate literary brevity.  WFMJ

  • Campbell City School District’s K-6 building held a Stay in the Game event last week as students with top attendance were rewarded with visits from the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers mascots. The program aims to reduce chronic absenteeism and build habits that boost academic success.  The Vindicator

  • Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership seeks EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant funds to rehabilitate five abandoned gas stations in Warren, Mineral Ridge, West Farmington, and Liberty. Two Jan. 7 meetings at noon and 6 p.m. will be held at the Warren-Trumbull Library (Harding and Grant Rooms) to review draft documents.  Tribune Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • The YSU women’s basketball team bounced back with a win over UMass, scoring 72 to 69 at the FIU Holiday Classic (record now 8-4). Their next game is set for Dec. 29 at Cleveland State.  The Vindicator
  • High school sports brought strong weekend showings as Ursuline boys basketball won 74–65 Sunday at the Capital Shootout and Jaylen Gunther hit 1,000 career points with a 73–62 win over Canfield late Friday; other local games featured tight scores.  The Vindicator
