- ➤ The Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre awarded over $1.8 million in grants to 27 local non-profits. The funding included a $100,000 grant (for a first responder wellness center in Boardman) and additional awards to expand youth programs and shelter services throughout the Mahoning Valley. WFMJ

- ➤ Allyson Popichak, a teacher and coach at Cardinal Mooney, is set to receive the Linda Miller Award from the Ohio Speech and Debate Association at the Varsity State Tournament opening assembly in March in Youngstown. The honor recognizes her dedicated work in speech and debate education. WFMJ
- ➤ Newton Falls board has named interim treasurer Alan Boone (2016 grad) as Ben Marko leaves on Dec. 31 for a role with Canfield Local School District, and the board will search for a permanent replacement in the coming months. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ At Monday's meeting, the Howland Board of Education approved a new PK-6 literacy plan to pursue a state award under Gov. DeWine's Science of Reading Champions initiative. Supervisor Erin Pierce said the update will help secure future state and federal funds by unifying reading practices in all four district buildings. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ Governor Mike DeWine revealed results from the Science of Reading audit, with YSU among 14 institutions that met all 73 metrics + earned an 'in alignment' rating for its educator preparation program. The audit focused on research-backed literacy practices. WFMJ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Ohio Department of Natural Resources confirmed a fisher was captured on a wildlife camera in Cuyahoga County, adding to 40 sightings across several counties that mark the animal as a species of special interest. The finding highlights improvements in local wildlife habitats. The Vindicator
- ➤ ODNR released deer hunting weekend results on Monday showing hunters checked 15,835 deer during the Dec. 20 to Dec. 21 bonus gun period, compared with 17,386 deer during last year's similar weekend. Over the season, 111,042 deer have been checked and processed venison has been donated to local food pantries. WFMJ

- ➤ Mahoning County Treasurer Dan Yemma confirmed Friday that Kohan Retail Investment Group paid $1,063,789.40 in back taxes for Southern Park Mall, with all parcels now current. The mall is under new management with Bill McClure as general manager and its next property tax deadline is in early March. WFMJ
