- ➤ Animal Charity of Ohio in Boardman is matching donations up to $45,000 for gifts given through the end of 2025. The charity cares for 191 animals and urges residents to consider adoption and early intervention to help pets in need. WFMJ
- ➤ On Monday, the Youngstown Foundation awarded over $1.8 million in grants to 27 local nonprofits (including a new first responder wellness center in Boardman and an expansion project for the Rescue Mission shelter) to boost community services. The Vindicator
- ➤ Walter Duzzny, a longtime safety advocate who advanced Mahoning County’s emergency planning, died Dec. 16 at Kendrick Hospital. His work + from launching emergency programs to guiding first responders has left a lasting mark on the community. The Vindicator
- ➤ Willow Lake Campground in Trumbull County is set for a major revival under new ownership led by Justin Staten. The property will receive upgrades to its swimming area plus renovated facilities with seasonal campsites coming in 2026. Tribune Chronicle

- ➤ The Poland Historical Society received a box of yearbooks that complete its Poland Seminary High School Pioneer collection; the society has finished the 1990s books but still seeks others. - ➤ On Dec. 15, the board of education approved FMLA leave for two employees and set a $115 daily substitute teacher rate, granted one-year aide contracts, and accepted donations for classroom and athletic needs — actions that will help support the upcoming school year. Tribune Chronicle
- ➤ At Monday’s board meeting, the Howland Board of Education received an update on its pilot school security system designed to verify visitors and monitor entrances, with superintendent Kevin Spicher saying the district will evaluate the program after the new year (board members raised custody concerns). - ➤ On Dec. 17, Austintown Board of Education met to congratulate retiring board member Kathy Mock and make several personnel and contract decisions. The meeting approved staff resignations, new appointments and transfers, campus upgrades — including a new camera system at Fitch High School — and a new student club. The Vindicator

- ➤ Howland fire chief Raymond Pace said the fire department now offers monthly CPR classes for residents and businesses at its station and local offices (courses require a fee and use American Heart Association materials from University Hospitals), continuing a program revived after COVID. - ➤ Burkey Road closes between Raccoon and Orkney from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29 for tree cutting; detours are via Raccoon to Mahoning to Meridian to Burkey + Raccoon to New to Meridian to Burkey. WFMJ
