COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Youngstown Diocese concluded its Jubilee Year 2025, Pilgrims of Hope with a special closing Mass at St. Columba Cathedral on Sunday, Dec. 28, where Bishop Bonnar led the service that celebrated a year-long journey of hope and faith.  Tribune Chronicle
  • St. Brendan parish held its final Sunday mass as part of a merger with St. Christine & St. Matthias to form the new St. Mary Magdalene parish, which will hold its first masses Jan. 1 at the former St. Christine church on S. Schenley Avenue.  WFMJ
  • Families enjoyed the Winter Bash Brunch at Penguin City Brewing on Sunday, Dec. 28 where kids had bounce houses, face painting, games and a movie while adults attended a mixology session, and the free event continues every Sunday (at 460 E Federal Street) with a fresh twist.  WFMJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • A colorful Kwanzaa celebration was held Friday at New Bethel Baptist Church (1507 Hillman St.) where community members performed a welcome dance to honor Umoja, the unity principle, during a 90-minute event that underscored the need for collective strength amid social challenges.  The Vindicator
  • Saturday’s Kwanzaa event at the Newport library on the South Side featured discussions on self-determination (Kujichagulia), a writing workshop, and a reading from the children’s book about abolitionist William Lambert. Local historian Napier noted Lambert’s influence as community members shared personal stories.  The Vindicator
  • Trumbull County Historical Society launches a history series featuring Lydia Sutliff’s diary from Christmas morning (1898) that details her young son Edward’s joyful discoveries of his gifts and cherished family moments.   • Warren resident Amanda Colbert is stepping down after 10 years coaching the McGuffey Titonics robotics team at McGuffey PK-8 School, and colleague Alisha Alls is leaving after her election to the Board of Education. The team will compete in district tournaments in January (building on past state and national success).  Tribune Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project in Warren is seeking information about Ember, an emaciated dog found abandoned on Leiby Osborne Road in Southington Saturday (Ember will be seen by a veterinarian on Monday). People with details should contact the shelter via Facebook.  WFMJ
