COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Columbiana Public Library hosted its spring book sale on Friday with a $5 admission and books priced from 25 cents to $1 to raise funds for new programs and equipment. Today the sale runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as director Kathy Bennett said proceeds may expand the makerspace and cooking classes while the library faces a proposed $600,000 funding cut—sparking community concern.  WYTV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Youngstown fire crews responded at about 2:50 p.m. on April 4th to a dryer fire in a home on West Princeton Avenue—no one was hurt even though the right side of the home was damaged.  WYTV

CRIME NEWS

  • Angel Martinez, 47, was sentenced to four to six years in prison by Judge John Durkin in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to robbery and theft charges — he was arrested Sept. 18 at 11:10 a.m. on Freeman Avenue when he drove away in a running SUV.  WYTV
  • Jajuan Martin, 32, was arrested Wednesday at a Youngstown store by U.S. Marshals for active warrants from Pittsburgh after he tried to flee and rammed a marshal's car—police found a loaded semiautomatic handgun in his vehicle and he faced charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and improper handling of a firearm with arraignment set for Friday.  WKBN
  • A federal grand jury indicted David Poyssick, 41, on two counts of possessing a firearm due to his domestic violence conviction—Becky Poyssick, 45, faces a charge for making a false statement during a gun purchase and remains free while David has been in custody since his arrest on March 11.  WKBN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The NAACP’s Youngstown Mahoning Branch adopted a resolution that will support the restoration, maintenance, and preservation of the William Holmes McGuffey Wildlife Preserve, McGuffey Family Pond and Dock in Mill Creek MetroParks. The measure—backed by 17 organizations and leaders—aims to restore a neglected historic site used for recreation and nature trails.  WFMJ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ODOT announced a $1.5 billion investment that will fund 213 construction projects in 17 counties later this season—172 of which are new projects valued at $898 million. The projects will improve roads, bridges and other infrastructure in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.  WKBN
  • State Representative Nick Santucci sent a letter to Insight after two Trumbull County hospitals shut down and many workers were laid off. He said he talked with Governor DeWine’s office—who gave a phone number for help—and urged affected employees to call their federal representatives and OhioMeansJobs, including going to a Rapid Response event on April 4.  WFMJ
  • County auditors met last Friday at the Covelli Centre in downtown to discuss reforms aimed at giving property owners tax relief. They proposed expanding the Homestead Exemption, limiting funds sent to schools after reappraisals, and increasing carryover balances to address a 38 percent average rise in property values in Mahoning County.  WYTV

  • Champion pitcher Konner Reed threw a no-hitter in his first varsity start on Friday evening as his Golden Flashes beat Campbell 21-0 at Bob Cene Park — he struck out 15 batters with just 80 pitches — leaving Campbell with a 1-3 record.  Tribune Chronicle
